Currently, the Tasting Aficionados group has raised money for numerous charities (for specifics please visit our website). Since implementing the fundraising, the Tasting Aficionados have raised a total of $7,498 for the charities. With plans to do different charities each fundraising event, the group hopes to help numerous people in the community from all different walks of life.
1. Pour approximately one ounce of tequila in a Riedel tequila tasting glass or a brandy snifter.
2. Hold the snifter at the base (not the bowl), raise to eye level to determine color, clarity, and any defects or abnormalities.
3. Smell: 1st smell through your nose. 2nd try smelling through your nose and mouth at the same time. This may take some time to master but when done correctly you should be able to get different aromas and flavors then through just the nose.
4. Take a small sip, keep between your lips and tip of your tongue for 10 seconds before swishing the tequila around the inside of your mouth, then swallow.

<3PiAPnq7Anl25=> One Members View On Attending One Of Our Tastings
.. Written by Michael Moore
Tequila Joe’s Tasting Aficionados had a tasting on March 16, 2007 which was held at Ashley’s house, a current member. From the start, Tequila Joe was there to welcome everyone and make sure people were comfortable with what was going on. There was a table set up in which the bottles being tasted were displayed as well as table stands showing Tequila Joe’s ratings of how he interpreted the taste of each tequila. This was a great way to understand a little information about the different kinds of tequila, as well as what to expect from them.
As the tasting began, Tequila Joe gathered the group of around 20 and poured each member a shot of the first brand of tequila. The tequila was poured out evenly by a dispenser which pours a half ounce automatically. This allows for the perfect amount to be tasted and enjoyed before the next tequila is tasted. As everyone was gathered in the kitchen, Tequila Joe gave a brief description of the tequila and then began to tell everyone how to taste and enjoy it. This portion of the event was the most enjoyable because it showed a different side to drinking tequila. While in college or most of your adult life, people think of tequila as grabbing the shot glass and pounding it back with a lime to help alleviate the harsh taste. Tequila Joe showed a different side of tasting tequila, by holding the shot glass up to the light and slowly swirling you can see the legs of the tequila. Each tequila is different and when held to the light you can see the different colors, texture, and legs as it swirls around the glass. Next, he showed us how to smell the tequila because each one has a very distinct aroma. This was actually very fascinating because of a trick Tequila Joe showed everyone. The trick to smelling tequila and enjoying the different aromas is to first smell with your mouth closed. Then, by opening your mouth and breathing in with your mouth and nose it allows for a very different smell of the same tequila. Tequila Joe’s final instructions were to take a small sip and let it sit in your mouth, and then swish it around to taste the differences within the tequila. Learning the actual process of sipping tequila and enjoying the different aspects is what made the tasting much better.
The people attending the event were great. They all were very friendly and talkative, making everyone feel comfortable during the event. It became a group of people talking about the different tastes of tequila and which one was their favorite. Having the six different tequilas to taste showed drastic differences from what was typically thought of as a quick gulping drink to something that was enjoyable. The sharp taste of some tequila’s, especially the Reposado tequilas, gave characteristics that were not familiar with the average person. One of the tequila’s, actually had a chocolate taste to it which could only be enjoyed if someone was sipping on it instead of chugging the tequila. Overall, attending this event of Tequila Joe’s Tasting Aficionados helped to gain knowledge on tequila and allowed for the appreciation of a different way to taste a product that I was not familiar with.
I was introduced to tequila by my brother, who made a name for himself taking what became to be known as "Sam Shots" (Approx. 6oz). However, until 2004 I only drank the golden elixir at bars (mainly the Cantina...as many know) and parties. When Patron Platinum was released I bought my first bottle and my collecting habit was born. From that day on, I became obsessed with collecting rare and hard to find tequilas. My obsession lasted about a year, providing me with more than 50 bottles but soon after I started to get bored with the collection. I stopped purchasing tequila and started to polish off bottles from my collection. Don't worry the collection is still going strong thanks to the help of a friend who bought me a book about tequila for my birthday in 2005. Once I started reading about the history, process, culture, etc. I was hooked again. I started buying every book I could get my hands on, which fueled my passion for tequila to new measures. Shortly after I finished my first tequila book, I started traveling all over California in search of rare bottles. My collection continued to grow reaching 75 bottles in 2006. With the growing collection, I started being known for my tequila and knowledge of the beverage. With some minimal convincing, I hosted my first tequila tasting in celebration of Cinco de Mayo 2006 and have continued to provide tastings and share my knowledge with all those who desire. My collection can be viewed on MySpace under Tequila Joe's Collection and on our website at www.tequilajoescollection.com. In short, this was how I became to be known as Tequila Joe.

Background
Tequila Joe’s Tasting Aficionados, or Tasting Aficionados for short, is a nonprofit group that meets every two weeks to try new tequilas and raise money for local charities (note: not every event is a fundraiser). While the group was founded by Tequila Joe, he does not dictate the discussions or the tastings. Members all share information and knowledge about the tastings in a cooperative, non-judgmental environment. By bringing people together with different tasting backgrounds, the Tasting Aficionados are able to expand their tequila discussions to levels that could not be attained separately. There are two forms of memberships for the Tasting Aficionados: a free general membership that does not include the rewards program and a fee based rewards program. Currently, it is free to join the Tasting Aficionados rewards program but it will not stay that way. When the Aficionados group reaches 100 members, the rewards program will no longer be free to join. Upon reaching new levels of tasting experience, members can receive rewards to commemorate their tasting achievements. The Tasting Aficionados group hopes that through their various tequila tasting they can broaden their knowledge, palate, and friendship while improving the community through fundraising.

History
Tequila Joe Horrigan started hosting tequila tastings for people in early 2006 and started the Tasting Aficionados group in December of 2006. Tequila Joe had a lot of people interested in the tequila tastings so he decided one Sunday that he was going to start a tasting group the following Tuesday. With such short notice, he believed that the first tasting would only have a couple of friends attending it. The first Tasting Aficionados event was called a roaming tasting, which entailed everyone going bar to bar in Davis trying a tequila at each place. To his amaze, fifteen people showed up for the first tasting. It was a great success. Tequila Joe was not sure what he was going to do with the group at that time, so he wrote down the tequilas each person tried the first night in belief that he may use the information in the future.
Shortly after the first tasting Tequila Joe decided to have a rewards program implemented. He decided that the first 100 people could join the rewards program of the group for free and that in the future he would need to charge a membership fee. By looking at other tasting clubs in the area and figuring out what he liked and did not like about each one, Tequila Joe was able to design the framework for his own tasting club. The first thing decided on was rewards after trying 25, 50, 75, and 100 different tequilas at different Tasting Aficionados events over time. The rewards, in order of attainment, are a Riedel tequila glass, a shirt with the Tasting Aficionados logo, a bottle of tequila, and an out of town tequila tasting trip worth $100 dollars.
Next, in the framework, was finding people to help with the group and some sponsors. Tequila Joe talked with one of the bars (The Davis Graduate) in the Davis area that had the largest tequila selection and got them to be the host bar. This meant they would bring in tequila reps for tastings and give discounts to the members. They were glad to be involved and eager to help. Then Tequila Joe met Art Guzman, who owns a few of the La Piñata Restaurants and tequila bars in the Bay Area, and he decided to sponsor the Riedel glasses for the group.
After doing a few Aficionados tastings, Tequila Joe got the idea to incorporate fundraising into some of the events. Once they started doing the fundraising, the sponsors and opportunities really opened up. Now the Tasting Aficionados have Adrian Blanco sponsoring engraving (which customizes the Riedel glasses), Kia Jafari who designed the Tasting Aficionados logo, Andrea Manners donated numerous tequila shirts for raffle prizes, Tom Lugo who is going to design the website and flyers in the future, and Oro de Jalisco who donated a bottle for the tastings and plans to provide more in the future. Zocalo has also been added as the Sacramento host bar for the Tasting Aficionados. In addition to the host bar responsibilities, Zocalo also donates items for raffles and giveaways.
Now, in their current state, the Tasting Aficionados are continuing their tequila tasting and fundraising. The group has hopes to continue changing the perceptions of tequila and tequila enthusiasts, while improving the community through their donations to local charities.
