Stanley Kubrick once said that communicating visually and through music gets past the verbal pigeonhole concepts that people are stuck with.
I was born in Belgrade, Serbia (former Yugoslavia), from a father who loved John Waynes attitude, smoked more cigarettes then Joe Eszterhas, and drank far more alcohol then Mel Gibson; and a mother who constantly complained about me spending hours in front of TV, instead of practicing math and physics. After graduating from high-school, I worked in the metal factory. My hands were on steel, but my mind was somewhere in a fantasyland where pictures and sounds blend together to create a brave new world, the world of cinema. At the age of 22 I decided to jump over the wall and enter the New World. I ended up working in the old steel mills of Cleveland, Ohio. The same steel mills Cimino used in the 1970s to set up some of his shots for The Deer Hunter. I ended up crossing the old Cleveland railroad tracks, the same tracks Jarmusch used in the background of his Strangers in Paradise. I ended up living in the same old ethnic neighborhood Eszterhas grew up in. During the day I worked in the old steel mill, and attended college in the evening. Three years later I received an Associate Degree in Photography. In the Midwest art does not pay bills, but hot steel does. I worked in the metal industry for years...
At the same time, I shot stills, dreaming that maybe, one day, I shall be able to move them, the same way Muybridge did with his horses and old cameras. I allways posessed an entrepreneurial spirit. After graduating from college, I started producing short motion pictures. These nano-budget productions ended up being screened at some film festivals. We are surrounded, influenced, and manipulated by sights and sounds from the movie projector. As David A. Cook points out, we can choose to live in ignorance of its operation, or we can teach ourselves to recognize its manifold deceptions... Furthermore, we can become operators, and creators of audio-visual magic. Free your mind, and do it. Express yourself. Peace... my friend!
Who I'd like to meet: People who want to make a better world; who don't kill others for money and oil; who support arts, education, and progressive thought; who think that John Waters is a great director; who agree that this world is very f(expl.)d-up today, and needs to be changed; and those who have some brains, and don't live only to, as my filmic friend Chris Hlywiak would state... eat, $hit, and die...
