Tavo Carbone used to stand in the shower as a kid, fully clothed with the curtains closed- and make his mother "announce" him. The curtain- SHOWER curtain, that is- would then opn, unleashing unrelenting hours of completely directionless, improvised songs. It could be said that Tavo toured much more in those days...showers.
Tavo began writing songs in his parents' Brooklyn,NY house when he was 12. During this time he started playing guitar, influenced by the contemporary sounds of groups like Nirvana, but mostly the music that his parents played in the car on long drives- Howlin' Wolf, The Beatles, Randy Newman, Willie Dixon, Roy Buchanan, Lord Buckley and Tom Waits (though he was always afraid of Waits as a child, because upon hearing him always pictured a 500-lb. black man drooling on a microphone).
Because Tavo didn't know how to read or write music, let alone the names of the notes he was thinking of, like many young songwriter people filled pages upon pages with "bum bum bum, bah, dat, dat, hoy", etc. Of course, at a later glance these words did not help document a melody and made absolutely no sense at all.
At age 18 Tavo stopped painting, which had occupied most of his time. He began to take music more seriously and found that it served him better through his glass eye compass young manhood misadventures. In the following years, he would teach himself piano oompa-loompa playingwise, accordion, bass and other things he sort of pretended to play ok. From 1999 to 2006, Tavo has privately recorded 18 albums.
...On one hand, some of them are horrible. But some of them are ok too.
They're 4-track recordings of ideas that were largely never finalized or revisited. They're certainly not sold at shows. And they sit in a drawer, never really played to anyone at all...Because drawers are where important things go. Like socks. Tavo Carbone also slept in a drawer for a couple weeks as a baby. You can ask his mother Nancy or his father, Kye.......or his sister, Kia (although she wasn't born yet).
Tavo Carbone and his band, 2/3 Skeleton have their main webpage of actual finished material, to be found at: http://www.myspace.com/tavocarbone23skeletonband
This webpage was set up to have 2 week revolving postings of 4 track demos done outside that band, by Tavo at home. That kind of puts a damper on the whole idea of "private recordings". But I- I mean HE- would like to share them.
The latest 3 are new from the summer, 1."Crumbling Teeth", 2."How to Pick a Wooden Flower" and 3."On the Moon" (For Sophia).
Thank you for listening to my music!
As a kind grandmother once said, "Bury me upside down so you can kiss my ass".
