What is MMA?
Though rules have been adopted, there is no general sanctioning body for the sport, and the sets of rules vary according to the laws of individual organizations and localities. It was thought that Olympic recognition would be forthcoming for the 2004 Summer Olympics, held in Athens, under the banner of pankration. However, the International Olympic Committee was unconvinced that Greece could handle the total number of sports proposed. To placate the IOC, the organizers removed all new medal sports and pankration missed out.[5]
The techniques utilized in mixed martial arts competition generally fall into two categories: striking techniques (such as kicks, knees and punches) and grappling techniques (such as clinch holds, pinning holds, submission holds, sweeps, takedowns and throws). Some unarmed hand to hand combat techniques are considered illegal in most or all modern competition, such as biting, eye-gouging, fish-hooking and small joint manipulation.[6][7][8] Over the last ten years, strikes to the groin have become illegal in all sanctioned organizations.[6] The legality of other techniques such as elbows, headbutts and spinal locks vary according to competition or organization.
A victory in a bout is normally gained by the judges' decision after an allotted amount of time has elapsed, a stoppage by the referee or the fight doctor (in the event that the competitor is injured or can no longer defend himself intelligently),a submission, by a competitor's cornerman throwing in the towel, or by knockout.
While competition in the sport is occasionally depicted as brutal by the media,[9] there has never been a death or crippling injury in a sanctioned event in North America.[10] The only verified fatality in competition is the 1998 death of Douglas Dedge in an unsanctioned fight in Ukraine. There are unconfirmed reports that Dedge had a pre-existing medical condition.
Team Thunder goes to battle for R. J.
Team Thunder battle it’s toughest opponent yet, when it went to battle to raise money for R. J. The son of sifu Chris Smith . R.J. was diagnosed with sickle cell and is fighting a tougher opponent than any of us could imagine.
Team Thunder wanted to join the fight so we entered a charity event on April 19, 2009 at Mango Tree fitness, in Watertown, CT to help raise money for R. J.. The event featured Grappling, MMA, & Muay Tie kick boxing.
Justin “The Operator” Flamagleti entered the 170 - 180lbs division, after only 8 months of training Justin managed to hold his own against a 17 year wrestling veteran who weighed in at 186lbs ( brackets had to go out of weight and exp due to the small venue). Justin lost by points, but put up a great fight.
Mark “The Marine” H. stepped in at 145lbs and did battle in the 150-170lbs weight class after only two months of training mark was submitted with an arm bar by a great competitor with 1 ½ years exp.
Walter “The Rottweiler” Williams grappled in the heavy weight division. Walter weighed in at 200lbs. His first match was with a strong fighter who had 100lbs on Walter. After 4 minutes of rolling Walter pulled out the victory by points. His second match was with a 225lb 13 year wrestling vet, although the wrestler was a fierce competitor with a great ground game Walter was able to sink in a gullatine choke for the win. His third match was a surprise to us all when a fresh grappler stepped in to face Walter for 1st place. After a few minutes of pushing back and forth Walter was able to bring the 270lb opponent to his knees where The Rottweiler slapped on a vicious gullatine choke, for the win.
Next up was Jorge “ Chuppa Cabre” Cruz stepped in for his first ever MMA match. Weighing in at 155 he did battle with fellow Army recruit Picket who weighed in at 162 lbs. Jorge dropped his opponent with an upper cut to the body and finished him with a ground and pound in the first round. Both fighters fought valiantly.
Johnny “ The Rage” Brenier was unable to compete due to a miss communication. Johnny weighed in at 164 lbs and after trying to drop weight for an hour Johnny was only able to shed down to 160. His opponent Rob “ the contract” Cipriano refused to fight unless Johnny got down to 155 lbs. Sometimes things don’t always go our way, but we do what we can.
Team Thunder would like thank every one who turned out to help Sifu Chris Smith and his family in their time of need. We wish them the best and our prayers are with them.
To all the competitors who fought despite weight and exp differences, you all have the martial spirit and you should be proud of yourselves for your willingness to put others needs before your own. You are all truly inspirational men and women!
