Te Aranui O Tahiti's Blurbs |
About me:
Te Aranui O Tahiti is an annual San Francisco event since 2007. It's meaning is "Route to Tahiti" a name given by the Tahitian Dance Master Coco Hotahota. It is produced by Elizabeth Bertumen in collaboration with Roiti Sylva and Etua Tahauri. Te Aranui O Tahiti (TAOT) is an event celebrating the Arts and Culture of Tahiti featuring the talents of Tahitian Dance Groups from all over. These groups exhibit their appreciation of the culture through dance and music in a non-competitive atmosphere. This is the first event of its kind in Northern California offering cultural workshops in dance and music and diverse display of crafts from many talented artisans.
TE ARANUI O TAHITI 2008
The Solo competition workshop was very informative.Dancers from Merahi O Tehani, Tamali'i, Ka Ua Tuahine, Na Hoku of Canada and Nemenzo participated in the workshops. Our special guest, Mr. Coco Hotahota and Roiti Sylva conducted the class, breaking down basic steps necessary in a solo dance competition routine. Correct execution, spelling and terminology of the steps was emphasized. The class ended with an open discussion and each student danced free-style to live drums and given an evaluation score sheet referencing all steps covered in the workshop. Coco had a special surprise bonus and taught the class an "'aparima vava". Next year's cultural workshop is in the works with something new! Watch for future updates.
The event featured the group talents of Te Orama, 'Ote'a 'Api, Tiare O Te Ao and Nemenzo. Te Orama filled the stage with dancers of all ages with an 'Ote'a and Aparima. Their lively program ended with an impressive grand finale in full Tahitian Ote'a costume. 'Ote'a 'Api was breathtaking and vibrant in true Tahitian tradition. They brought down the house with an unexpected "audience participation". Roiti remenisced and commented "that's how we looked and danced an aparima back in the day". Tiare O Te Ao capitivated the audience with their energy, whimsical progam and fascinating storyline. Tiare's dancers were awesome! Nemenzo's blast of spring color inspired costumes ended the event. Dancers of all ages danced to the beautiful music and vibrant drums.
Overall, Coco commented regarded the weekend activities as "tres beau". Te Aranui O Te Ao (TAOT) 2009 will take place April 25 and 26, 2009 at the San Francisco State University Gym. We thank the groups, dancers, musicians and vendors for their role in making TAOT 2008 a memorable one. Mark your calendars and check our site for updates.
