Very diverse influences! A real assortment! From sixties folkies like Baez and Simon & Garfunkel to 'leading ladies' of song like Ella Fitgerald, Lena Horne, Peggy Lee, Eva Cassidy, Joan Armatrading ... from performers on the current folk scene such as the wonderful Hilary Spencer to bands like Chumbawamba. And that's just for starters! Alan is an old folk'n'blues man who has dabbled in rock'n'reggae, Lola is a classically trained flautist who is now into both traditional folk and modern music and vocalist Denise's first love is jazz - no wonder it's an assortment!
Neye Benziyor?
Probably nobody you can identify ... you tell us ...
TeaTime Assortment are a curious assortment of people with a real assortment of music. From bluesy-jazzy sounds to traditional and contemporary folk, from standard ballads to original material … are the Assortment light and sweet like a custard cream ? ... or darker and enticing like a bourbon? Or are we just crackers?
Two of the songs you'll hear on this site are Alan's, with flute arrangements by Lola.
It's So Easy is about remembering why you love somebody - and remembering that you're loved even if your lover behaves foolishly at times. It was written for a specific couple - in this case, a man and a woman - but if
you're in any couple that love each other, then we hope you might find something in it for you.
Scotland's Daughter is almost Denise's life story set to music! It's not obvious (most of the time) that Denise's origins are a little north of Hadrian's Wall! Writing this song for her was not without difficulty. The family came from Argyll, but somebody already wrote 'Always Argyll', her mother was from Campbeltown but there's already a song about that place ('Campbeltown Loch I wish you were whisky') - thank goodness the family moved to the Firth of Forth and not the bonny banks of Loch Lomond!
Both of these songs can be found on our CD, 'TeaTime At Tom's' (our thanks to the wonderful, endlessly patient, Tom Trimby of Sticklegs Studio without whose skill it could never have been made and without whose home-brewed beer, Lola and Alan would have stayed sober ...)
We have also included some tracks from the CD that are not original material, since checking with PRS and discovering that our PRS-MCPS Licence for the CD covers us for copyright and entitles us to use tracks on Myspace that are not our own stuff!
You can often get a taste of TeaTime Assortment (a sound bite?) at Wivenhoe Folk Club where they have become the ‘house-band’. (First Thursday of every month, 8pm at The Greyhound, High Street, Wivenhoe. Call 01206 827759 at least 48 hours before the event for free membership and details of guest artists appearing).
This years festival is headlined by Billy Bragg (Friday), Seth Lakeman (Sunday) and Peatbog Faeries (Saturday) with many more top artists also performing incl the award winning The Demon Barbers and Henry Priestman.
