Techni Crew / Ill Fated : 1984-1997
Members from over the years: I-Knight (J. Paige) DJ and Producer, Damon Manson, MC KD (Kervin Williams) Laid Back Rob (R. Stevenson), Patrick Debbs, Hank Brown, Born U-neek (T. Leslie), Larry Rodriguez AKA DJ Larry Rodriguez, Greg Anderson, Alan Bantae, Lisa Corona, Dion Johnson, Kid Casanova aka Young D aka Dartan, Larry (Anthony) Motley aka Motz, Cowboy aka C.O.W (E. Techni Crew (original members from the Rio Linda, Northgate and Westgate areas) started out as a dance crew 1983-1984 making in on a few local tv shows, but mainly at the Cal Expo State Fair (you know, on the hill, by the waterlog ride). As soon as we were able to afford turntables, we started to hook up the house parties around the 916, that is where Dj I-Knight started to develop his skills. In those days, what was a DJ without MC’s, and if ya’ll (from the 916) remember when Darryl Dennis (Master of the Mix) used to throw the New Years Eve parties at the Sacramento Convention Center, we performed there too! From house parties to mix tapes (cassettes), that was basically our beginning. In approximately 1988, we took our bedroom recorded track “We are the Techni Crew” featuring Kid Casanova to radio station KYDS where we met for the first time, future member “Count Mixxula”. Mixxula was the first DJ in the 916 to host a rap show! Then hooked up with Cowboy (not to be mistaken for C-bo) and MC Krush (29th street’s original MC’s). The Crew then hooked up with Brian Edwards (BMW) for the financial help they needed, in which he executive produced the Crew’s first two projects. The first release was in 1989 “I’m not a thug” EP distributed by City hall, then came the EP “Enter 916” (1991) featuring BMW and the Sac-town rap all stars, which was the first collab of artists in Northern Cali, “Enter 916” (produced by I-Knight) was in heavy rotation KSFM 102.5 and got a lot of love from then DJ Mark S. Allen (now of Good day Sacramento). In approx 1990 I-Knight wins a “Battle of the DJ’s” at the Crest Theatre and was offered a position to, co-host and DJ, Sacramento’s first Rap video show titled “Hip Hop 90” along side of Morris B, now Morris Knight (Bay area radio personality). In the early 90’s, soon to be new member Mixxula, performs for “Friday Night Live” at various high schools in Northern California, which leads to many performances for the group. The first LP “Danger Island” under the name Techni Crew was in (1992). Around this time, I-Knight also DJ’s several night spots in town. The most memorable (dangerous) was The Spot in DPH (across from the Robertsons Center on Norwood) this was before the cop station and all of the new businesses and apartments out there! CAN YOU SAY TARGET PRACTICE! Thanks Dre with Concious Vibes (Lol) Also, Nikki's (Fruitridge and Franklin Blvd.) along with DJ 1 Luv (Frank) Mixxula joined the group in approx. 1993-1994 and the named changed to “Ill Fated”. The EP “Califunk” (1995) was the groups most popular release, then came the single from Califunk tilted “Hott Butt Naked Sexx” which also featured the unreleased track “99 bottled of beer”, both releases was distributed by Black Market Records. We did concerts from everywhere form Marysville/Yuba City (Gi Gi’s) to Sac, Oroville, Santa Barbara, Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton, Reno to name a few. Ill Fated won the S.A.M.M.I.E.S award in 1996? (co-winners along with Fonke Socialistics). Ill Fated went their own ways shortly there after; the ship had run it’s coarse!
High Lights include performances with: Rodney O and Joe Cooley, MC Hammer, The Roots, NWA, Montell Jordan, Marvaless, Brotha Lynch, Coolio, Mix Master Mike, The Coup, A lighter shade of Brown and JT the Bigga Figga.
Accomplishments: SAMMIES award/Single in the top 9 at 9 (KSFM 102.5) for several weeks!
