Goodbye Joe, we gotta go, me-o my-o, gonna bore you all to death with my bio...

I don’t do HTML, so I don’t know how to make these stupid sentences turn into paragraphs, so they’ll just run on. My name is...uh.. Ted Hoffman (I had to look at the page title). I’ve been playing guitar since I was about 13 or 14. I’m originally from the Washington, D.C./Arlington VA area. Moved to Port Huron, Michigan when I was 12. While at a picnic in Sarnia, Ontario, a friend of my mom’s had a guitar, and I bugged the living crap out of him to show me some chords. I’ve been a junkie ever since.

I played my first gig in 1975 at a Junior High School Valentine’s Dance, in a band called "Rhode Apple". Naw...we weren’t that bad, and three of the members are still pretty close buddies (the picture is in my slideshow captioned "Band of Brothers"). After the rock and roll crash and disco craze of the late 70s killed rock and roll bar audiences, I schlepped around playing in country bands, polka bands, wedding bands, anything that I could make a buck doing. I played with an all-original northern "southern rock" band called "Yankee Fire" with some other close buds (now calling themselves the "Borough Brothers"), and then met some other folks and went on to play in a house band called "Dumpstreet" at the now-defunct Colony Bar in Port Huron. When that ended on a sour note (as most bands do), a few of us donned spiked dog collars and spandex and became hAiRbAnD GoDz, using the name "Shrapnel". We gigged, uh, like maybe once or twice. After that came a couple of fun projects, RPM for one. RPM had a lot of fun at the Golden Dawn in the summer of 84, but they still hate me for leaving for another soon-to-be defunct band I think was called "Hot Pursuit" or something. Hot Pursuit might have almost been a really fun band. Seems like something else happened but I can’t remember what. I have vague memories of playing the Canterbury in Sarnia and a crazy stunt that almost got the other guitar player a broken leg.

All during this time, the kids were coming (I’d gotten married). Decided it was time to get a real job...so I went back to school, finished school in Tallahassee, Florida (where I gigged briefly with an oldies band), graduated and moved to Alaska (where I didn’t really gig at all), and then moved here to Kansas City.

And that’s the TRUTHHHPBPBPBPBPB...

InfluencesBeatles, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Allman Brothers, Johnny Winter, Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, Todd Rundgren, Philly Soul, Motown, Beach Boys, Byrds, Eagles, The Who...all the great harmony groups and quite a few I'm just hearing now. Old country, Texas Swing, Jazz Fusion, Funk, Basie, Ellington... Good songs!
Sounds LikeA water buffalo during the rutting season. Heck, I dunno. My influences are pretty rangey. We're likely to sound like just about anything.

HARLEY HOTRODS UPDATE—GREAT NEWS!!!

Congratulations to all local, professional musicians. With our networking and sense of community, we have scored a victory.  We have spoken out when proper respect for our profession wasn’t shown, and we have been heard.

I am pleased to say that I received a call yesterday afternoon from Harley Hotrods.  Lynn Palmer, the source of our angst has been removed from her position as Operations Director.  There is an overhaul of management taking place.   Mr. Wayne Thompson, a man I have worked with on many occasions for charity bike rallies, poker runs, and most recently Bikers for Babies has stepped in to clean house and make sure the bands are properly treated.   I know Wayne to be a straight shooter who will honor his commitments and follow through with his promises. His focus will be the music, and making sure Harley Hotrods remains a great venue for KC’s best bands.

I  can’t thank all of you in KC’s music community enough for your support and help in spreading the word when there was a problem with this venue.  I am now hoping I can count on you to make sure our fellow musicians know, and our fans know that Harley Hotrods will be a great place to play, eat, drink, and party with our friends in Blue Springs.

Wayne has informed me that the schedules will be poured-over early next week to make sure that every gig currently booked is verified, and any gaps in the schedule filled.   I look forward to playing there again, and continuing to work with Wayne for a long time to come.

Thanks again, and happy gigging!!

Hey there,

Here's one from left field...

Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?

A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:

Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella

Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.

Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.

I encourage all to visit the YouTube page to learn more (Show support! Rate! Comment!) and responsibly circulate as widely as possible, here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaIim3Rj7L4

Help to raise awareness.

Say have you checked out my web site recently?

Take care and keep in touch.

Best,
Faber.

A WARNING ABOUT HARLEY HOTRODS IN BLUE SPRINGS

If you’ve booked shows at Harley Hotrods, you should seek another show for that date. They are unreliable and untrustworthy in terms of business with musical professionals.

Lynn, the booking person at Harley Hotrods has e-mailed me to cancel our June 26th & 27th shows. Yes, that’s right; with less than 9 days notice.  She flat-out lied to me, saying she had sent an e-mail and made a phone call to tell me last week.  I could see not getting an e-mail, or even not getting a voice mail, but not getting either? I call bullshit.

I was forwarded an e-mail from a fellow musician that showed she had plans to replace us without notice over a week ago. I have confirmation from someone inside their organization that they had planned to replace us over a week ago. But they obviously lacked the backbone to tell me until it was brought to their attention that I was aware of their plans.

Salamander has been very good to Harley Hotrods. We played their grand opening with less than a day’s notice.  We bailed them out again soon after that when they needed a band for a Sunday morning bike rally. We have packed their bar when the weather was most inhospitable. In return, we have been shit on.

Don’t let this happen to you or your band.

This is a business.  This is how I pay my bills and feed my kids. I would think they would have some respect for others who are just trying to make a living.

In short: Avoid Harley Hotrods. Don’t book shows there, don’t drink there, and encourage your friends, fans, and families to spend their money at a more respectful establishment.

Please pass this note on to any musician or music lover you may know.

Thanks, and Happy Gigging!!
Russ Divine..
