After years of fronting several Atlanta bands (Einsteins, Clay Henry, The Darwins), and as a member of the Flinch, Ted Lee crawls out of his 8 year absence with a new album entitled "Cuckoo Singing In The Cuckoo Berry Tree". Recorded at his home studio, "Cuckoo Singing In The Cuckoo Berry Tree" finds Ted playing drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards.
"I've always wanted to do the true solo album, where I played all the instruments. Once I setup my home studio, the project took on a life of its own." There are guest appearances from former Flinch members/current Stovall members, and longtime friend/collaborator Edmund Lowe. "Recording everything yourself is great, but there are times when an outsiders point of view is needed. I was fortunate to have some great musicians at my disposal when I got stuck."
"Cuckoo Singing In The Cuckoo Berry Tree" contains ten songs written between 1997-2008. From the solid groove of "For Granted", to the fast and loud "Serenade", each song showcases a different side of Ted Lee's writing, which is the main attraction.
Subject matter on "Cuckoo Singing In The Cuckoo Berry Tree" ranges from topics like bullying (Little World), to over bearing landlords (The Man Upstairs). There's the usual array of relationship songs, from "I Can Tell", with its "I know you don't love me anymore" message, to "The Gods Must Be Lazy", and its "I can't have you, so I'll dream about you" message. Of course there's the stab at the establishment, which this time takes the form of College DJ's. "That College DJ" has Ted singing about the exclusivity that some in the minor league radio business take. "That College DJ won't give us half a chance, he thinks we sound too much like Duran Duran". Steeped in heavy synth action, the irony is thick.
"This is the album I had wanted to make for nearly 15 years. I'm immensely proud of this collection of songs, and finally glad to have birthed them. I'm sure my next album won't take another 15 years to make".
"Cuckoo Singing In The Cuckoo Berry Tree" is due out in late November and will be available on iTunes and from tedlee.net.
