ATARIX : THE AGE OF GEMINI (c)2007 TRUTYPESOUNDS (p)2007 ACIDSAMOVAR
"With the russian breakcore scene currently exploding, Atarix comes back with his first album in three years, following a hectic early-2000 release schedule. A bit of everything has been used in the making of this "Age of Gemini", and one gets some dark d'n'b, a dose of raggacore, some big heavy beats and a spoon of dubstep on this resolutely dark, distorted and generally speaking fast album. Maybe not the most original breakcore album out there, but still well done and a sign of the current dynamism of the russian scene." ADNOISEAM.
WFMU RADIO SAYS : "Sergey Khaninev was one of Russia's first breakcore artists, first releasing under the Rebell Terract moniker in the mid 90s for a few international labels as well as his own short lived Riot Trigger Records. In 2003, Sergey founded his own internet label, trutypesounds, although he's released the majority of his work on other labels. His first "official" (aka costs $$$) Atarix release "The Age of Gemini" came out late last year. From the many free releases floating around on the internet, here are a few of my favorite tracks by this multifaceted artist... The king of [listen] King's Message From Other Side Of Saturn (mp3) from the Done Until It's Morning ep is The King…you know, Elvis. An off-kilter, Atarified shuffle mockingly accompanies the recontextualized "Let Me". Behind all of it lies a drearily sequined ambient backdrop which brings out something haunting in Elvis' "All day you and me dancing on a cloud…let me have another dance with you." Is this pop? Once you learn about Atarix's many aliases (Sooperskalar Band, Serjio Hakinen, Escapes, etc.) you might not be surprised to hear Atarix does hip-hip beats too. Smooth Taste Remedy begins unassumingly but unfolds wonderfully into a quirky but laid back groove – Atarix is great at cleverly introducing new instruments. Braindead from an ep of the same name, brings some heavier beats. Tracks like Nu Meka ,from the "Frrdgz 4 Tha Klnkly Nsane" lp, reveals Atarix's skill for stretching beat oriented music – here he cuts up a jazz sample, giving it a maniacal edge without quite destroying the original feel. The excellent Sardoru State album contains some of Atarix's most experimental and expansive ideas. For Zen Tuning, Sergey breaks out his guitar, which he heavily shreds with his computer. Nice use of pitch shifting, delay and cut ups to create vague, slowly drifting harmony. The three tracks Black Comatose, Naked Nerve Player and Follow form in effect one extremely diverse song. The fractured sample that abruptly begins the song quickly fades into a slow tempo shift that soon explodes into a wonderfully crystalline melody, only to be superceded by this eerie Jandek-esque moment…the madness only increases from here, we even get a rare moment of melodrama. I don't know why we don't see Atarix attempting long form composition more often, since he clearly knows how to take the listener through the many terrains he's mastered."
Bio : Sergey Khaninev aka Atarix is a Russia-based electronic music artist from Moscow. During the 1990s he used amiga & pc with different music tracker software to compose digital hardcore/punk tracks, which were released on the D-Trash (Canada), A-Klass (New Zealand), Riot Trigger (atarix`s past cd-r label), DCFE2000 (r.i.p. now, Singapore), Rip The System (Canada) under his alias "Rebell Terract". At some point between mid-2001 and 2003 he left his home for serveing in army. He spent there 2 years writing new songs using outdated pc with Fasttracker II. Between 2003-2006 he found his own net-label Trutypesounds and appeared on famous 20kbps & floppyswop net-labels (under names of Sooperskalar Band, Serjio Haakinen and others) with his non `hardcore` sound, his other side. The renewed Atarix`s music and live performances (played with Alec Empire, Howie B, Patric Catani, Boom Bip, Daddy G, Pole, Venetian Snares, Amon Tobin, Enduser, Ambassador21, Techdiff, DJ Scotch Egg, Malorix, Monster Zoku Onsomb, Sickboy, Georg Korg (Apokriff), Cristoph Fringelli, Krumble, Ceephax, Droon, Main$tream, Aaron Spectre, Toecutter, Pilfernator, Flying Sausage, Legs Le Brock, Georg Korg, Zavoloka, 2hcompany, Gromov, Xian, Imminent and many others) was accepted by listeners very well and in 2006 he was signed to Acidsamovar record label and released his first solo full strength record «The Age Of Gemini» which contains various styles from breakcore, drill`n`bass jazz to hiphop, dub, noise, 8bit and beyond.
