  • Bio

Telemachus Brown is a four-piece band formed in Melbourne, Australia in 2004. The band released EP Medicine Songs in June, 2006, which spawned the song (Wrong about) Justin Langer, a track that exposed Telemachus Brown to a UK audience, thanks to its use on BBC television documentary Empire of Cricket. .... The band was formed by Bendigo-raised Telemachus Brown, who released a debut solo album called Disappointing Second Album in July, 2004 on the ill-fated and now-defunct Melbourne indie label, AWC Records. .... Rising from the ashes of his AWC experience and with true rock egomania, Telemachus recruited J.Smith (aka Eddie J. Shred), Simo (aka Holden J. Wood) and Thane L. Drew (aka Whitey J. Trash) to play together in a band named after him. .... With an emphasis on humorous, arcane lyrics and accessible guitar pop rock, the newly-formed Telemachus Brown began playing small Melbourne live venues, attiring themselves in ridiculous outfits and entertaining crowds with their rare take on popular culture, the human condition and relationships through songs such as She Was a He, My Baby's from Lesbos, (Stealin') Eddie Vedder's Voice and (We're not a) Heavy Metal Band. .... The band recorded Medicine Songs with Paul Fox at Bakehouse studios in February, 2006 and released the five-track CD on June 30 that year with an official launch at the The Laundry in Fitzroy as part of Geek's Indie Night. .... Upon release of the EP, the band was shocked to be referred to in the street press as 'Indie's answer to the Village People'. While happy to be compared to a novelty act and dismissed as silly, the band was offended to be considered indie. .... The tracks I'm Asexual and (Wrong about) Justin Langer received significant airplay on Melbourne university station Syn FM, with front man Telemachus Brown donning pyjamas for interviews with breakfast show The Hoist to promote the EP; though he spent more time talking about cat curfews, clocks and K-Mart than he did about the songs. .... After continued fun at live shows and the odd street festival, and songs like (She don't like) Songs that are Political, Gonna Marry a Rich Man and I Kill Ants for Fun gaining popularity, the band took an indefinite break in May 2008, and Brown embarked on some solo shows. .... The band looked to have disappeared completely when, without warning, it re-emerged in 2009 with the news that Medicine Songs would be released on iTunes to coincide with (Wrong about) Justin Langer appearing in a BBC cricket documentary. .... For some strange reason - one that still mystifies the band - iTunes censored the title of My Baby's From Lesbos, so that it appears as My Baby's From L****s in the online store. .... Why? It was a question that The Age newspaper in Melbourne also asked, but one that no one seemed to be able to answer. .... After a rush of online sales following the screening of the documentary and the iTunes controversy, Telemachus Brown – the band – once again disappeared into the rock ether. For some strange reason, Telemachus Brown returned in 2010 as a one-piece for the coveted Birdfest in Melbourne, before reforming its classic line-up for Bendigo's Gigfest in June (Telemachus' first hometown gig). After vowing never to play at anything ending in "fest" again, Telemachus Brown, this time as a seven-piece, played at Batfest in Melbourne in September. Telemachus Brown played another solo show in Bendigo in November to celebrate his birthday, before deciding to quit music and dissolve Telemachus Brown, in all its forms, for good. It didn't last long and Telemachus Brown reformed in early 2011 to support DC3 (ex-TISM) and Pinky Beecroft (MGF) at the Northcote Social Club - this time as a two-piece - Telemachus singing and Thane L. Drew on drums. The madness continued the very next day when Telemachus Brown played a solo show at yet another "fest" - Dukefest - before vowing to never play as Telemachus Brown again and start performing in a two-piece band with Thane, called Shane and Thane, using his real name for the first time. Who really is know whether Telemachus Brown still exists. Those who like grey tracksuits and songs about cricketers, German sociologists and confused sexuality may well hope so. Others, it has to be said, are much more indifferent.
