"Tell Astorya" (3705 28th Avenue, Astoria/ 718-726-1710) is an alternative cafe that recently opened in Astoria, Queens. The Café functions as a gathering space for the local community of townspeople and college students alike, offering our café space for performances and events. We offers organic, fair-trade coffees prepared with care and served with a fine selection of locally prepared treats.
Owned by Astoria resident Dega Omar, originally from Somalia by way of Canada, Tell Astorya engages the community by providing fun activities in which anyone can participate. Weekly activities include:
Wednesday nights are "Conversation Cafe" nights. Cafe customers get to chat about chosen weekly topics. (7-9 PM)
Thursday nights are "Open Mike" nights. Anybody with something to sing/say/read can participate. (7-9 PM)
Fridays are "Independent Film" nights, featuring films by locals. For example, this Friday, they'll feature "Late Bloomers" by Annette Cyr, painter and filmmaker. The film is about the surprising world of John Ollom's adult beginner ballet classes at the McBurney YMCA on 14th Street in New York City. (Begins at 7:00 PM)
