BLOGCRITICS Music Review:
Jack Tempchin - SONGS
Written by David Bowling
"While this is Jack Tempchin’s sixth studio album, he is best remembered as a songwriter. “Peaceful Easy Feeling” and “Already Gone” by the Eagles; “You Belong To The City,” “Smuggler’s Blues” and “I Found Somebody” by Glenn Frey; “Slow Dancing” by Johnny Rivers; and many other quality songs have all sprung from the fertile mind of Jack Tempchin.
SONGS is his latest studio album and consists of new tunes plus a cover of his own “Smuggler’s Blues.” Tempchin has a unique lower register voice that serves him well. Here he brings it to a new series of catchy, well structured songs which are lyrically excellent.
SONGS is an album of well crafted compositions presented by a talented songwriter who hopefully will receive some personal exposure as an artist. No doubt many of these songs will end up being covered by other artists. All in all, a very listenable album..."

SONG REVIEW:
"Johnny Rivers' last big hit 'Slow Dancing', was written by the highly underrated Jack Tempchin, who had scored a big hit with the Eagles' 'Peaceful Easy Feeling'. Like that song, this embodied the romance of the effect of music itself, and does so with elegance and a strong sense of craftsmanship.
Musically, there is a vague 1950s feel to the entire melody, and it really does wrap the listener in a gossamer cloth of music and overall feel...
...it's an absolutely great piece of craft and remains one of Johnny Rivers' finest later-day records." -Matthew Greenwald

JACK TEMPCHIN SHORT BIO:
From humble beginnings at coffeehouse hootenannies, to landing two songs on the best-selling album of the 20th century, Jack Tempchin has been a pivotal figure in the genre-defining country-rock music movement of the 1970's that's come to be known as the Southern California sound.
Tempchin’s musical influences were formed during the 60’s... first, as an impassioned music fan and college student in San Diego, where he immersed himself by booking blues and folk luminaries at the SDSU BackDoor music club. Inevitably, he took to the stage himself; first on harmonica and later on guitar.
As fellow artists rolled through town, Jack frequently would extend invitations to those needing a place to crash for the night. Among these were Lightning Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Jackson Browne and Johnny Rivers.
Fatefully, Jack’s gracious hospitality also endeared him to the members of a band called Longbranch Pennywhistle and a soon-to-be friend and co-writer: future Eagle Glenn Frey.
His comrades would reciprocate the favor in time, thus introducing Jack to the fertile Southern California folk country-rock scene of the early 1970s. It was here that Jack’s own song penmanship began to acknowledged by his peers with their requests to co-write and cover his songs.
Jack’s own PEACEFUL EASY FEELING was recorded by the Eagles during this time. And soon, his co-write with Robb Strandlund of ALREADY GONE would also be covered by the band, with both tracks ultimately making it on to The Eagles Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975.
Like many of his contemporaries, Jack rolled out his own band The Funky Kings during the seventies. Signed by label impresario Clive Davis and produced by Doors audio architect Paul Rothschild. Their Tempchin-penned single, SLOW DANCING (Swayin' to The Music), could not do for the band what it did for Johnny Rivers, who’s own recording of the tune roared up the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977.
Jack's prolific writing output has continued over the years, with artist of all genres covering his songs. Most recently, he wrote SOMEBODY and IT'S YOUR WORLD NOW for the Eagles latest effort, LONG ROAD OUT OF EDEN.
*As the future continues to unfold, odds are increasing that a Jack Tempchin tune may provide the soundtrack for it ;-)
