While drawing immensely from the sounds and spirituality of Reggae music, Temple of roots is probably best describes as "Alternative Hip Hop". Defying conventional Rap and Dancehall stereotypes, Temple of Roots are nonviolent, spiritual, politically aware, anti-materialist vegetarians.
Vocalist/Poet Josh “the Scribe” Millican and multi-instrumentalist Manny “Manteka” San Gabriel began working together as founding members of the political Hip Hop trio “Dead Sea Scribes” in early 2004 (www.myspace.com/deadseascribes). When this group disbanded in 2006, the duo continued collaborating and dubbed themselves “Temple of Roots”. Singer Linda "Stingah" Hurshman wrote lyrics, recorded, and gigged with the group from 2006 until her departure in mid 2008.
Josh Millican came to the Bay Area from Southern California by way of UC Santa Cruz. A nationally recognized “Slam Poet” in the 90’s, Josh began his love affair with live music as lead vocalist of “North Spaulding Sick Boys,” a Los Angeles based punk-metal outfit. Years later in Oakland, he was recruited into the conscious hip-hop group “One Over Crew”. These days, Josh continues to write and cultivate his unique, urgent-yet-mellow flow.
Musically, Manny “Manteka” San Gabriel IS Temple of Roots. Mixing electronics with organic instruments, Manteka builds each track from conception through final master. A native of Puerto Rico born to Filipino parents, he's well versed in guitar, bass, keys, piano, drums, and (most importantly) production. Live, this one-man-band brings a custom rigged PA System, invoking the old-school Dancehall vibes created by Dub pioneers King Tubby and the Scientist. Often playing without a set list (and without pausing between songs) Manteka drenches each track in effects on the fly, making each performance one-of-a-kind.
Radio Stations currently playing Temple of Roots include: KSVY (Sonoma), KPFA (Berkeley), and KALX (UC Berkeley).
