Born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens Tenille takes R&B Soul and Hip-Hop to a whole new level. The singer/song writer tells her story through candid soul stirring lyrics that take you on a mental and emotional voyage. The songstress takes her listeners on a journey through her mind sharing her struggles, fears, imperfections, joy, pain, hopes and dreams. Singing about the ups and downs of love and life, her voice captivates us with its raw strength and power. Rather than trying to fit fads or molded sounds Tenille’s diverse style sets her in her own category. Tenille says “My style changes according to my mood and emotions. Sometimes I feel like screaming into the mic out of frustration…just to vent, and sometimes I want to make love to the mic and be as soft and sexy as I feel.”
The New Yorican began singing at the age of four, making videos to send to her grandparents in Puerto Rico. She would also perform at her family house parties wowing them with her voice and charisma; they recognized she had a gift at an early age. Growing up listening to Motown, anything from The Supremes and Chubby Checker to the enchanting sounds of Marvin Gaye. She later got exposed the then rising culture of hip hop, she was smitten. Intrigued by artist like LL Cool J, Run DMC and Rakim who were part of the hip hop movement. Her other influences range from Mariah Carey and Mary J Blige to Madonna and Marc Anthony, its no wonder her sound is so fresh and innovative.
Having strict parents who limited her exposure to what she listened to, didn’t stop her from sneaking into her brother’s room and borrowing his tapes while he was out. She was falling in love for the first time and she would cling to it with her last grasp, music was her destiny. She started getting into the hip hop scenes going to block parties. When her parents found out they kept her under watchful eyes. Sitting up in her room she began writing, wanting to experience so much outside her room Tenille’s imagination would just sway her pen.
Not having much growing up the songstress didn’t always have up to date fashion or new school supplies. In school she was quiet and subdued, but would never hesitate to get up on stage during her lunch “Talent Hour” and sing an acapella. “People didn’t remember me because I was one of the popular girls or because I dressed to fashion. People remembered my name because I would sing to anyone on request, and that has not changed.” recalls the singer.
Tenille’s relationship with music is intimate. When writing or in the booth it envelops her mind, body and soul. Her passion and dedication illustrates through her songs. Music is how she expresses herself, an outlet that brings peace of mind and sanity. It’s not the idea of fame or fortune that draws Tenille to music but rather music itself. For the songstress, being able to touch, inspire, or help a person get through something drives her passion. Sharing the most personal aspects of herself through music and having people to relate to her on the deepest level of her mind, she feels a sense of fulfillment.
The sultry singer’s cool, calm, and sexy demeanor only enhances her humble and loving nature. The infectious personality which reflects through her songs captivates the hearts of fans all over.
