Sense the Terror
Old but definitely refreshing!
"Terawrizt and Nu-Centz have finally decided to release their previously shelved mixtape Sense the Terror on free download after leaving many of their fans questioning what had initially happened to the project. After a promising video was made for the track Sin City, we didn’t hear anything else from the tape and along with the third Nu-Centz album, both were never released for different reasons. The mixtape was recorded about two years ago, before Tera’s debut Art Imitating Life came out, with this being scheduled to be the follow up release and so to some extent Sense the Terror is one of the missing pieces of the story between Tera’s debut and the Class A’z release - the drink money mixtape.
If the Hip Hop scene in Dublin wasn’t so close knit, we probably wouldn’t have these lads working together. If you had no idea that these two were friends and listened to some Hot Property (Nu-Centz and Rawsoul) and then listened to some DHT (Tera and Sub-X), you’d be quite puzzled at how a collaborating project would sound. Well, we first heard glimpses of the duo during Tera’s album but it was Sense the Terror that was the middle ground for these two lads to blend their differing styles together. The mixtape not only complements these two mc’s but captures the sound of Irish hip hop at that time with the duo’s choice of features being those who were at the top of the scene and who they regularly gigged with during that period.
The first track is Sin City, which many of us know from the video directed by the Lambert Brothers. It features Redzer and gave many of us a taste of what to prepare for so it’s only fair that this is the opening song of the tape. Lucky features early material from Maverick Sabre and makes the point that success doesn’t always come to those gifted with a talent whereas Bebo Emcees with Collie highlights the trend of people sticking half arsed tunes up on bebo and calling themselves musicians. The Takeover raises the point of the duo’s differing approaches to their music but tracks like Versatile Styles help to prove that the pair work perfectly together. The mixtape has plenty of hip hop tracks to just vibe to and some light hearted hot property styled songs but the one that stands out is a dark grimey song called Till I Reach the Top. Along with Terawrizt getting your head bopping, this track brings Jambo and Nu-Centz together for surprisingly the first time and if there ever was a song that should be made into some gully video, it should have been this one.
Overall, Sense the terror isn’t as dark as Art Imitating Life but isn’t as light as Nuie’s I Can Explain, providing a perfect mix for both sets of fans to enjoy. There’s no arguing that this material is outdated and that everyone involved has went on to seriously improve their own sounds but it strikes home how much of a shame that this project had been held up for as long as it has. Maybe if this tape was pushed the way it should have been at the time it was due out, the lads wouldn’t have to be playing catch up to gain the same recognition that the likes of Rob Kelly or MJEX are currently receiving.
Speaking as an extremely critical Irish hip hop fan, I strongly believe that both this and Nuie’s album should be finished and released with all their old material so that the lads can progress in the future without having a gap in their story as this is not just what their careers as rappers has been missing but what Irish hip hop as a whole has been missing."- written by Urbanize, March 2009.
"Consisting of Nu-centz, Rawsoul, Redzer and Terawrizt, the 'Drink Money' mixtape brings together four
of Ireland's hardest working MC's in the shape of Class A'z. Having worked individually on a number of projects in recent years, this new alliance demonstrates a fresh, and serious attitude to Irish Hip Hop. Cultured, creative, insightful and genuinely comical, Class A'z typify a new breed of Irish MC that lyrically spits in the face of the stigma that surrounds the term 'Irish Hip Hop'. Although the title 'Drink Money' may suggest a 'tongue in cheek' and nonchalant attitude to their craft, Class A'z provide a witty and uncompromising selection of tracks that both entertain and captivate. The opening track 'All You Got' explodes a war cry to the rest of Irelands Hip Hop community, and is one of the best examples of the groups' exceptional lyrical delivery.
Tracks like 'How I Feel' and 'Regrets' see the group add an identifiable authenticity to normally tired song concepts of life and everyday struggle. And to offset the inspired honesty and seriousness, 'Love The Blow' and 'Suck These Nutz' provide the comic relief with clever writing and crafty punch-lines. Although the group strays into uncomfortable territory with 'Up and Down', a 'club' track that genuinely fails to motivate, the stand-out track 'Living Legend'; a story of cinematic quality, epitomizes the level of accomplished writing shown by Class A'z.
Drink Money also boasts a high quality production that both compliments and elevates the lyrical content and sees producer Ratman set the bar a notch higher for his musical counterparts. 'Drink Money' isn't the tale of life in modern day Ireland, and luckily it doesn't set out to be. It is, however, a sharp, honest and sometimes embellished collection of tracks from a group of MC's trying to forge ground for Hip Hop in Ireland. There's no naivety to Class A'z music or subject matter and they're not the archetypal American impressionists we've come to expect. What they do deliver is humorous, concious; and at times, extremely accomplished writing. Undeniably, this collective of MC's prove that Irish Hip Hop deserves the ear of the people." - written by Fog, Rap Ireland, October 2008.
The Drink Money Mixtape is now availalbe on iTunes.
Terawrizt is a North Dublin born emcee who has made a big impact on Irish Hip Hop since the release of his debut album in the summer of 2007. After hooking up with a Finglas producer by the name of Sub X.
Terawrizt released his "Blank Canvas E.P." before dropping his widely anticipated "Art Immatatin Life" album quickly gaining him a large homegrown fanbase as well as a following state-side. At a time when music, espically hip-hop has become stale and stagnent, emcee's are a dime-a-dozen and independant artists seem to be no more than a drop in the ocean, Tera has displayed his enigmatic qualities through his deep concious lyrics, his multi-syllable rhyme schemes, intricate wordplay and his uncanny abilty to switch his flow up constently from club tracks to political and social context and everything inbetween.
In the late summer of 2007 the Sin City video produced by the Lambert Brothers, lifted from the upcoming Terawrizt & Nu-centz album "Sense The Terror" on a track featuring Coolocks Finest Redzer was released and became an instant hit with over 80,000 plays on youtube and a cult classic in Irish Hip-Hop.
Following on from the success of his debut album, Terawrizt played his first Show in the U.S. in Boston, Massachusetts at the "Irish Hip Hop Throwndown" at The Middle East, sharing the stage with Slaine (La Coka Nostra & Special Teamz) and Irish Rap Legend Rob Kelly, and returned to Boston for a special Paddy's Day show in early 08.
Around the same time Tera co-founded one of Irelands most talked about groups Class A'z with Redzer, Nu-centz and Rawsoul, who released probably Irelands best hip-hop cd to date "The Drink Money Mixtape" raising the profile once again for the hungry Dublin emcee.
Having appeared on a host of radio shows and played gigs from Edinburgh to Donegal, suppporting Styles P & Republic of Loose and also a return to Boston for the "Irish Hip Hop Throwndown 2" in November, 2008 has been a busy year for Tera. With his solo double disc project "Written In Stone" nearing completion and the Class A'z working on material for there follow up release, expect to be hearing alot more about this hugely talented Irish rapper in 2009.
Art Immatatin' Life
"Terawrizt is Dublin's upcoming Irish rap act with the release of this debut 17 track album, full of political hate and what it's like to be brought up in Dublin's street life, humored by some great lyrics. This album has got some sweet old school beats that bring out the hip hop in most of the tunes.
It's very hard to pick a favorite track as they are all very interesting to listen to, but ill go for "Azbo's" this song will relate to most of us Dub's, it's in your face. It can catch you when your not running and it's got a savage melody - sit back chill out and stick on the headphone's and switch off. This album has got some fantastic songs to listen too." - written by T. Halpin, Music Review Unsigned, 2008.
