Against a backdrop of grungy guitars and a solid, fluid rhythm section, she sings her expressive lyrics in a voice that, while not exactly pretty, is utterly convincing.. As a vocalist, she doesn’t preen or pose – she just sings it like she means it. Producer/guitarist Mark Caputo does a fine job disguising the fact that Ms. Falini only has a few melodic bows in her musical quiver. His multi-faceted arrangements and sympathetic guitar work give each song an individual musical identity, while providing a cohesiveness that allows the album to work as a whole. It’s not all sweat ‘n’ spite, though; Teri’s got a sly sense of humor that she uses to temper some of the angrier songs (like the opening one-two punch of ‘The Good Life’ and “Cinderella”) and she displays a softer side on the acoustic closer, “Ice Lover’s Mouth”. She is now reportedly hard at work completing the follow-up to this remarkable record.

At moments, the style is like Nirvana with a female vocal. Now, before you say "You mean the first Hole record?" let me explain. Teri Falini has a dirty style of playing. It's rock in the sense of early 90's grunge, pre-pop-punk eplosion. Her vocals are haunting sometimes. Often times she sounds hoarse and dingey. It works, especially with what she's trying to accomplish. When she doesn't seem to be channeling the late Kurt Cobain, I hear Catherine Wheel mixed with the slower tunes of Veruca Salt. There's a lot of power behind these songs, and often she finds herself pushing the envelope.
Where most female musicians fronting bands seem to be mock-divas, Teri Falini reminds me of bands like Bikini Kill and The Donnas before signing to a major label- the music is what it is, she isn't trying to be what she's not, and you couldn't give a crap how her voices sounded as long as she rocked out and delivered a good lyric. Now, Falini sounds better than both of those acts... that's just where she seems to be coming from.
If your the type who is sick of their female rockers trying to ape either Gwen Stefani or Amy Lee, check Teri Falini out. This is how girl rock stars should sound, just as rough as the males...
PUCKNATION
Teri rocks like Liz Phair or PJ Harvey in their mid-90s hey-day or maybe a lass trashy L-7. Her music is raw but kinda catchy, with none of the radio sheen that so many artists use to clean up their sounds.

N'empêche, c'est un vrai cœur d'artichaut. Dès les deux premières chansons, il est question de prince charmant et de Cendrillon. Teri Falini a eu les mêmes rêves que toutes les petites filles, mais les désillusions sont passées par là. Il n'y a qu'à lire la description de l'Américaine modèle: "success, a flower dress, all your life, ending in a minivan, the good wife" ("The Good Life"). Plus loin, le mythe du prince charmant est démonté de façon lapidaire: "And then he came on his white horse, and now you're totally bored". Comme elle n'est pas contente, Teri enrobe ses comptines désabusées de grosses guitares, que la production FM ne cherche pas à affiner. Et vous savez quoi ? C'est mieux comme ça. Teri Falini n'a pas besoin de dépouiller ses chansons pour émouvoir. Elle ne geint pas sur fond de guitare folk. Elle ne pousse pas non plus de cris déchirants de fille torturée. Elle ne minaude pas. Elle chante simplement de sa voix de mâcheuse de chewing-gum, avec une décontraction toute californienne, par-dessus des guitares jouées par des mecs tatoués. Elle n'a pas l'air bien fréquentable, c'est vrai, avec ses platform shoes et sa mini-jupe. Mais ses chansons tiennent la route : belles mélodies, morceaux accrocheurs, voix nature, production "mainstream" mais on a dit qu'on s'en fichait. On pense irrémédiablement à Liz Phair, dont elle pourrait être une cousine californienne. Comme elle, c'est une écorchée vive un peu bravache, impudique ("I lick my wounds for you") et provocante. Le genre à sortir seule au bar du coin et à repartir avec le premier molosse venu, avant de se réveiller au petit matin devant une télé allumée, dans un appartement glauque. Le genre à en faire une chanson belle à pleurer, comme "Chopsticks". Ici, dans le genre poignant, il y a "Cut". Teri s'y taille les veines en se demandant "But what does it mean that I don't believe in God or anything ?". Une fille compliquée, en somme : allumeuse et paumée, féminine et virile, lucide et autodestructrice. Une Cendrillon des temps modernes. Mais ne lui parlez pas de prince charmant.
