I don't really have permanent members in my different groups. It depends what kind of gig or recording I'm gonna be doing and who is available at the time. The personnel on my new CD "Traveler" is listed elsewhere on my MySpace site. You will also see personnel listed for my upcoming shows.
Influences
Tons of influences, but my two main gurus, if you will, are John Coltrane and Miles Davis. I've played most styles of music over the course of my career; from jazz. blues/R&B, funk, rock, and pop of various styles to classical flute.
Some of my favorite living artists are Wayne Shorter, John Scofield, and McCoy Tyner.
Growing up in Oslo, Norway, I've also been influenced, at least indirectly, by players like Jan Garbarek.
One of my favorite smooth jazz musicians is Jeff Lorber. I just dig his tunes and feel.
I love black music. I'd say I love most quality R&B and much hiphop and some rap as well. As a matter of fact, I'll probably be leaning on a few hiphop type grooves next time I record a CD.
I love Brazilian music and have been discovering a lot of great Brazilian singers and musicians on MySpace lately!
- And when I hear Afro-Cuban stuff and Salsa, I can't keep my feet still!
My favorite rock/pop band remains Steely Dan.
I was a serious blues fan in high school and fronted a blues/rock band as a vocalist (this was before I started to play saxophone), but once I heard Coltrane, I was completely sold on picking up the sax.
Some of my favorite blues people are Buddy Guy and of course B.B. King. Lightnin' Hopkins swings hard just by himself with that guitar going and John Lee Hooker is great, too.
In British blues, I have always loved the guitar (and vocals for that matter) of the one and only Peter Green, one of the original founders of Fleetwood Mac (som of you folks will know that the Mac originally was a British mostly-blues group). Clapton's blues guitar, especially when he came on the scene with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, has always been intense. You can go to iTunes and check out what these cats sounded like in John Mayall's bands back in the 60s. Listen to "John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton" and the album "A Hard Road" with the same group, but featuring Peter Green on guitar and some of the vocals.
Sounds Like
The best way to know how I and my music sound is to check out my recordings, or come to one of my live shows!
Hi,
We just finished the making of my new CD Urban Vacation. JIMMY HASLIP of the YELLOWJACKETS and JEFF LORBER produced it and play on all the tracks as well. Tony Moore is the main drummer. I'm stoked!
You can hear samples of a couple of the tunes right here on this website. The tracks are called Bail Out and Parlophone.
The album will be ready for official release in February - you're going to start hearing it on the radio in January - but until then you may now buy it at my live performances.
- I just played the Brea Jazz Festival and we had a great time! Big crowds! Very cool!
Anyways, while you're waiting for my new album, check out all the tracks or buy the music from my 2007 album Traveler with all original music and lyrics as downloads on this page. Further sales links, including for mail orders and also my page at iTunes, are at terjelie.com and tcatcatrecords.com. You may also go directly to cdbaby.com/cd/terjelie for mail orders. You can buy my CD Traveler at traditional record stores, as well.
It features some great heavywight L.A. musicians: David Garfield ..boards, Ernest Tibbs on bass, and Jeff Olson on drums. Bassist Tim Landers is also featured.
I had initially planned to record an all jazz CD with a couple of semi-electric jazz-funk tunes included. We started recording the more funky stuff on the first session. The cats just sounded so hot on that stuff that I decided to make the whole album a more funky and perhaps more "commercial" project. I also wrote a couple of vocal tunes, so I'm singing on this CD, too.
I've been a professional musician and music educator most of my life. My main instrument is saxophone and I double, like most sax players, on flute and clarinet. I have also been a singer on and off throughout my musical career. I have a Master of Music degree - Jazz Studies concentration.
For more info on bookings check out my Sonicbids site!
Also, this fall, I'm recording my next CD, again with some of the best musicians L.A. has to offer. I'm really exciting about it!
More soon, folks!-

REVIEWS
"Sometimes you can tell a book by its cover. Basking in the glow of a Pacific Coast sunset, cheerfully holding his tenor, Norwegian Terje Lie embodies the music on the smooth sounding Traveler: easy, funky and fun. Supported by some of the best Los Angeles musicians, Lie plays alto, tenor and soprano on a collection of catch y and grooving originals. He has an ingratiating sound on tenor, and uses it well on the funky "Pier Avenue" and heavy back-beated "Runnin' Outta Time." His soprano is clear and pristine, be it with the slapped bass support by Ernest Tibbs on "Warp 7" or with the dreamy and atmospheric keyboards supplied by David Garfield on "MDDIII." The best and most alluring moment comes when Lie's tenor joins with Garfield's keyboards in a lovely and romantic duet during "My Love." This Scandinavian has plenty of warmth and allure to his playing. Smooth jazz fans will certainly want this one."
—George Harris, All About Jazz magazine
"Terje Lie—TRAVELER: What can you say about a Norwegian that felt like a New Yorker in his soul but dug the southern California vibe much better than the Big Apple cold who has been playing since he was a kid? You can say he finally made the debut album he's been waiting his whole life to make and that he knows it's important to make a good first impression because you don't get another chance. This is a fine introduction to a non-stop gig machine that will play anything anywhere but is a pretty dandy sax man that add s something to smooth jazz via his outsiders perspective. A nicely driving set that gives jazzbos a new player to celebrate."
