About me:
Well, I love to visit historical places and to read (especially mysteries and southern literature).
Favorite Foods: Greek, almost anything on the menu at a Japanese steakhouse, most kinds of brownies, and Jamaica Red Stripe.
I really enjoy watersports, including whitewater rafting, canoeing, swimming, and scuba diving. Hope to try windsurfing sometime soon.
Travel. Love it. Live it.
And, as a freelance travel writer and author, I spend a lot of time writing about...
PIRATES
There is no doubt that a pirate's life was filled with excitement, peril, and uncertainty. Any day could be your last due to severe storms, disease, and battle wounds. Even if you didn't die in combat, you could suffer a terrible injury that led to infection and then to death. Or you could get captured and hanged. However, you got to sail the world and seize what you desired, partying all the while. For those seeking escape from ennui, slavery, criminal charges, religious persecution, and poverty, a pirate's life looked darned good.
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the Devil
Had done for the rest
Yo-ho-ho and bottle of rum
I always thought I would have made a great pirate. I love to travel. I love the same places that pirates dug, such as Jamaica, Madagascar, and the Caribbean. I love to party. Plus, I don't have enough sense to be afraid of much of anything so I think I would have been valuable in battle. And there were some tough female pirates, like Madame Chang, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read. If you'd like to know more about these women or their counterparts or piracy in general, you may want to check out Pirates of the Carolinas.
GHOSTS
Why are so many of us mesmerized by the bizarre and unexplainable? Psychologists state that we are compelled by supernatural tales and paranormal experiences because they satiate our need for wonder, awe, and mystery. "These needs are deeply ingrained in who we are as humans and are probably healthy and adaptive," says Scott Lilienfeld, a psychology professor at Emory University (News & Record, Greensboro, NC 1/26/07).
Interesting Statistics:
37%[Americans] believe in haunted houses
32% believe in ghosts
26% believe in clairvoyance
41% believe in ESP
(A survey conducted by the National Science Foundation showed that 60% of those polled agreed that some people possess psychic powers or ESP).
21% believe in witches
21% believe in communication with the dead
9% believe in spiritual entities
(Gallup Poll and Baylor Survey of Religion)
Common Ghostly Terms:
Apparition: manifestation of a spirit visible to the eye.
Cold spot: phenomena in which part of a haunted area has a significantly lower room temperature.
Crop circles: Geometric pattern, often complex in design, that appear without logical explanation in a field.
ESP: extrasensory perception is perception that occurs independently of sight, hearing or other sensory processes. People who have ESP are said to be psychic.
Orb: anomalous or unexplained energy caught on film usually in association with a haunting, high EMF readings, and cold spots. They range in size and color, although typically white and spherical. NOTE: Some paranormal experts do not believe in orbs. They say they are nothing more than human errors while photographing or processing images.
Out-of-body-experience: a feeling of transcending one's own body to experience the world from a different perspective.
Paranormal: any event or object that defies scientific explanation or knowledge
Poltergeist: a haunting that involves noisy spirits but with no visible manifestations.
Psychokenesis: to move objects using one's mind without physical contact
Reincarnation: the belief that when a person dies the spirit is reborn in another body.
Psycho Kinetic Activity: movement of objects by spirits and the movement of objected caused by living persons with extreme emotions.
Spirits: a former living person who has returned to their original home location and appear as orbs, mist, vortexes, or shadows.
UFOs: Unidentified flying objects believed to be alien spaceships.
Vortex: energy that takes the shape of a tube in a photograph. The size and color vary greatly.
