The Terry Award's and Ms Wva's Queer News Ne Diyor?
Hakkımda: Friday, March 14th 2008, The Third Annual Terry Awards once again left a mark on West Virginia gay history, thanks to the courteous and amazing owners and staff of Woodstarr. They went beyond the call of duty, and the night went smooth as all get out. The gay community and many of its patrons came together to not only help sponsor and donate their hard earned dollars and work to help make this an event to see and I thank you all for it.
At 8:55 PM, Woodstarr was packed and we were beyond seating capacity and it was wall to wall people. There were many people recognizable to the gay community. Charlie Rouse or Charleston Pride was in the house, along with Bill, board member of The Living Aids Memorial Garden, Maxx and Bodaxia La Croix, owner and show director of CLUB MAXX, Sassie De Haven from Wheeling, and Michael Egnor, head of Capital Empowerment, Steven Tompa, Mr Mountain State Leather, many of the Mountain State Bears and Knights, as well as last years Leatherman of the Year, Captainahab, Perry Sampson, bartender from the Broadway as well as Grafitti too who was there to support our event.
9PM came and I came out to do the opener on what the awards are, and then introduced our host for the evening, Mr Toby Keith or Sean Krystofer Colby. We ran a very smooth award ceremony, and Sean did an excellent job hosting and kept the crowd laughing and having a great time. With antics from Ms West Virginia Queer News, Robin Hearts and the table full of lesbians next to the podium, and that joker Deliveryboy4u2.
10:30PM, The awards ceremony ended and people took a break to mingle and of course, to find their way to the bar for a cocktail or two. Once they settled back in.
It was 11PM, and the 2nd Annual Ms West Virginia Queer News Pageant was about to start. We kicked off with Ms Robin Hearts doing a number, and then relinquishing the stage to the six contestants who would be competing for the title. They were:
Contestant Number 1 : Lucy Lipps
Contestant Number 2 : Ashley Adams
Contestant Number 3 : Lacey Lynn Taylors
Contestant Number 4 : Morgan La Faye
Contestant Number 5 : Edie Sedgwick
Contestant Number 6 : Martina Dezerae
Our judges did an amazing job as always. The competition was fierce. Each category was a testimony of what true female impersonation is.
Red Presentation from each contestant was awesome, it was simply hard to choose who had the best. My personal favorites were Lacey Lynn Taylors and Ashley Adams. As I said they were all wonderful, but the best head piece would have to go to Martina. I also got a kick out of Ms Edie Sedgwick's version of Little Red Riding Hood.
And the Question and Answer, I think that Ms Ashley Adams said it all, that type of recognition and encouragement would be great for the community.
Then there was the creative evening wear competition, while the judges saw something different than I did. I simply feel that Ms Lucy Lipps creative evening wear was beyond compare to any of the competitors, her outfit was made completely from duct tape, and it was quite stunning.
The talent portion, everyone brought something different but each contestant should be applauded. Although, I do believe that the top talent was Ms Martina Deserae's.
It was a battle, and a hard fought one by all contestants but like in every pageant, there can only be one winner. I will say this I was sorry to see some damper faces, and I always feel bad when someone has to lose. I just hate it when a contestant can not hold their head high and gracefully take defeat.
Robin and Sean came to the stage, once Mimi and I compiled the scores.
The contestants came to the stage, one by one.
Robin then announced our winner for Miss West Virginia Queer News, New Face 2008-2009, Miss Edie Sedgwick but later went over the scores again and found out also that Miss Lacey Lynn Taylors was also eligible for the New face title, and they both scored the same amount of points making her also the winner for the right to be called Miss West Virginia Queer News, New Face 2008-2009.
Then the results came in for Miss West Virginia Queer News.
Starting with Number Three, Miss Lucy Lipps. Then second went to two contestants who tied, Ms Ashley Adams and Ms Morgan La Faye.
and the winner and Miss West Virginia QUeer News 2008-2009 is Ms Martina Dezerae.
I do want to say something about our former and our always, FIRST LADY OF West Virginia Queer News, she was simply the perfect example of what a representative for our magazine should be. She set the bar high and any lady who follows in her footsteps has a lot to fill. Robin Hearts will forever be a part of West Virginia Queer News, and will always have the right to say she was and always will be the FIRST LADY OF WEST VIRGINIA QUEER NEWS. Her class, her personality, and her talent as a female impersonator is hard to match. I only see big things for this entertainer, and hope one day to see her as a future Miss Pride of WV.
West Virginia Queer News wants to take the time out this year to thank you all for coming out and enjoying the festivities and the large array of food we prepared. I too wanted to let everyone know we had our first ever, TERRY AWARDS baby too. Miss Bobbie Jo Ross and partner Tracy gave birth to a baby girl Saturday morning after leaving the awards after Tracy went into the labor. Congratulations to you both. We love you.
And the winners are: Remember you had to be present to win!
