Those words you just read were written by vocalist Terry Dexter, the Detroit-born soulstress who grew up singing in her uncles Baptist church and who, at the tender age of 12 years old was performing backup vocals for the British soul collective known as Simply Red.
Terry Dexter...
Her name is familiar. You've probably heard of her before, and you may have even heard the full-range of her indelible vocal skills and unmistakable, impassioned voice on the works of other recording artists and soundtracks. She is perhaps best known for her own 1999 Warner Bros. Records debut, the self-titled release Terry Dexter which spawned two singles Better Than Me and Strayed Away, both of which charted on BILLBOARD.
But Terry's also known as a “singers singer,” and artists like (longtime mentor) Patti LaBelle, Jaheim, Eric Bent (thats her soaring voice you hear on Bent's number one hit, Spend My Life With You), and the Black Eye Peas will.i.am have all called upon her for guest appearances on their albums.
A multi-talented artist, Terry's lent her songwriting skills to the film soundtracks for Legally Blonde, Rush Hour, Bring It On 2, Deck The Halls, and made her acting debut in the 2003 feature film Deliver Us From Eva in which she performed a goose-bump inducing rendition of Amazing Grace.
More recently, Terry landed the lead role of Tyme Prentice in David E. Talberts popular play Love In The Nick of Tyme). This year Terry has a featured songs in two new feature films directed by veteran Bill Dukes COVER and NOT EASILY BROKEN which is based on the T.D. Jakes best-selling book. Terry's songwriting talents can be heard on the two new songs for which shes written for this soon-to-be-released feature based on the popular Jakes book. Terry's also penned the theme song, produced by the legendary George Duke, for the upcoming feature film bio SWEETWATER. Later this year, Terry reprises with Eric Bent on Ever Love, one of the tracks featured on his soon-to-be-released album.
Now its her time to take the spotlight as a solo artist once more. Terry's hard at work in the studio with producer and A&R maven Chris Bolden on her upcoming yet-to-be-titled release which will launch the newly-created independent label, PENNYS GANG RECORDS, co-founded by World Ski Champion and former member of the 1968 Olympic Ski Team Penny McCoy, and Chris Bolden.
The first single is the gorgeously arranged Beautiful One which Terry wrote with Jamey Jazz and Rahsaan Patterson, who's a favorite of the “BoHo” underground. Beautiful One is a stunningly beautiful and profound message of love, faith, and hope all graced with an understanding of our souls yearning to belong, to feel worthy and to know that we are all, indeed, Beautiful Ones. The song puts a spotlight on the need for all of us to love ourselves, and how the need for it is so universal. Terry describes Beautiful One as “a song that touches us at our core. I imagined this as a love letter from God to us, his children. Its an aural rendering of the Creator's love for his children that speaks of his enduring love, especially to the ones who feel that they dont belong, are invisible, forgotten.”
Terry's clear about the message forming the foundation of her music, and which serves as the underpinning for her upcoming release on PENNY'S GANG RECORDS: “I want the music on this album, which has a definitive spiritual outlook, to reach those folks who might have lost their way or who are struggling to maintain their faith and who may need to be encouraged and uplifted. I also want this music to speak to the believers, to those who know-that-they-know-that they know. I wanted this song to have a dual purpose, and be music that takes you to another dimension, to a deeper place.”
So, if you've been wondering what Terry Dexter's been up to, and when she might release another collection of her unforgettable music, you wont have to wait too long. You'll soon be able to hear Beautiful One, Listen, No Place To Go, In My Corner and other newly-created songs when her new album, tentatively titled LISTEN, arrives in the stores later this year.
