Grammy Award winner Terry Townson has become a driving force in today's music industry. As a world-class horn player, Terry's custom horn arrangements, horn tracks and live performances have been used by some of the biggest names in the music business. His music career began at the age of 10, Terry toured the country with his parents and grandparents appearing in churches and gospel revival tent meetings. Staying true to these roots, Terry has continued to put his heart and soul into every project he involves himself.
While attending St. Petersburg High School in Florida, Terry won the West Coast Jazz Festival soloist of the year honor (awarded by Hank Levy and Stan Kenton) and in turn, a full scholarship to Towson State in Baltimore, Maryland.
Terry then went on the road with a myriad of acts and genres getting a feel of the total musical experience. Touring with the likes of Delbert McClinton, Kenny Rogers, Shelby Lynne, South American super star Jose Louis Rodriguez (El Puma), Clarence Gatemouth Brown, and Felix Cavaliere and The Rascals… to name a few.
Performing with artists such as Ray Charles, The Temptations, Hootie and the Blowfish, Bob Hope, BB King, The Rascals, Dan Penn, Joe Ely, Lena Horne, Greg Allman, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Garth Hudson, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Guy. He has played live shows in backup bands with Jim Horn, The Memphis Horns, 'Blue Lou' Marini, Steve Cropper, Tom Malone, Bobby Keys, Paul Shaffer, Bernard Purdie, Bob Babbitt and Will Lee and numerous others.
Terry is featured on hundreds of records by artists like Michelle Shocked, Al Anderson(NRBQ), Delbert McClinton(Grammy), Colin James(Gold record), Clarence Gatemouth Brown(multiple Grammy nominations) and Charlie Rich. Recording at some of the most famous studios of all time… Muscle Shoales Sound-Alabama, Sun Studios in Memphis, Ultrasonic Studios- New Orleans, Criteria Recording Studio- Miami and RCA Studio 'B' Nashville. Multiple TV appearances on The Conan O'Brien Show, The Late Show, Austin City Limits, American Music Shop, The Texas Connection, HBO's 40th Anniversary Atlantic Records show at Madison Square Garden, ESPY Award show at Radio City Music Hall and even worked a handful of shows for Jim and Tammy Faye on their TV show 'The PTL Club'.
Terry Townson now resides in Vancouver BC with his wife Valerie. Still featured with acts in the US, Terry has been busy in Canada with guitar virtuoso Colin James (in the studio and on tour). The first record Terry collaborated with Colin on 'Limelight' just went gold. Since moving to Vancouver Terry has also been working with a number of other top Canadian stars such as producer Colin Linden, song stylist Tom Wilson and producer/singer/songwriter Craig Northey. Terry has been featured on CBC television series, CBC radio specials and a host of TV themes and jingles. Countless local bands and touring acts keep Terry busy in town during the rainy season.
In the studio, on tour, Broadway musical pits or just clubbing around town, Terry Townson continues to raise the bar in the trumpet world. His musical creativity has spawned a successful arranging career as well. The diversity of acts Terry has been associated with over the years equips him well in the arranging field. He has arranged horns on literally hundreds of records and shows around the world. With his arsenal of experience, Terry Townson can create the right lines/ harmonies and tasteful embellishments to any track.
