Tesla's Interests
|
| General | You're Mead!
What Type of Alcoholic Beverage Are You? brought to you by Quizilla | | Music | If I were to start listing musicians worthy of adulation I'd never stop, and I'd still forget whole hordes of important ones. I love many kinds of music: don't ever dream of pinning me to a genre and don't feed me the pap that is more closely related to marketing than to music.
On balance, the best singer-songwriters come from Canada, but we also have the Dan Berns of the world to belie that generalization.
Marc Cohn has no soul, but it's not his fault.
Lately I've been listening to a local Minneapolis radio station called The Current (http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/the_current/) that has the world's best mix. | | Movies | I like them a little twisted: American Beauty, Better Off Dead, Bladerunner, Casablanca, Edward Scissorhands, Heathers, Lord of the Rings, Mirrormask, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Pi, Snatch, Twelve Monkeys, Until the End of the World.
Special mention to The Slaughter Rule, for its soundtrack, which is full of "incidental" music from the movie, yet plays like a damn fine album. | | Television | No, thanks. | | Books | Far too many to list. A few favorite authors are John Crowley, Lewis Carroll, Kim Stanley Robinson and Jane Austen.
Lately I've been delving into Ayn Rand and a few treatises on design thinking and the causal relationships between people and our technologies. Next up will be economics: macroeconomics, the politics of wealth, and personal finance. Thereafter I think it will be time to drift back to graphic novels; I want to read "V for Vendetta" before I watch the movie.
No library is complete without an unabridged dictionary, Encyclopaedia Brittanica, the Bible, Shakespeare's complete works, and (nowadays) Google, so I keep all of those and a couple thousand others that I can't bear to part with. | | Heroes | My mother. Not for the usual reasons, either:
She grew up a good Catholic, Iowa farm girl in the 1950s, with all of the limitations of attitude and expectations that implies. With little outside influence (mostly found within care packages from her eccentric aunt Genevieve) she began to question all of the religious and social precepts with which she was raised. She has become one of the most open-minded yet critically discerning people I have ever met.
She did this without causing scenes or scandal or embarrasing her overprotective mother - for instance, she turned away from the church when she was all of six years old, and her thoughts on religion have been maturing ever since, but she never felt the need to force her changed viewpoint on other people. When she had me to raise, however, she protected me fiercely from the ignorance and prejudices that she was subjected to as a child. I only hope that I do justice to her in my daily life.

Tesla's Blurbs |
About me:
Tesla is my real name - honestly! I work in IT for an enormous company, and so far I'm really enjoying it. I live in a 100-year-old house with my best friend, Marble (my cat).
|
Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone who can help me figure out what I want to be when I grow up. Or else, those who can help me figure out how to not need to grow up.
