Movies Here's a clip I really like. The title "Arabic Bellydance" is a bit misleading; bellydancing is not originally from the countries on or east of the Arabian penninsula (which are predominantly Islamic cultures), but rather the countries sharing the eastern and southern Mediterranean coasts. The countries most famous for bellydance are Lebannon, Turkey, and Egypt, but it extended as far north as Greece and across northern Africa into southern Spain (formerly called Andalusia, and occupied by Middle-Eastern peoples) where it contributed to the birth of Flemenco. In fact, you will see some of this in the video clip. You'll be able to tell the Flemenco parts by the change in music, and a change of emphasis to footwork and sharper arm movements. Her overall style appears to be more northern, perhaps Lebanese, but is likely fusion (a mix of styles) like the music. It is very well done and I'm pleased to share it with you. (By the way, if the music is still playing on this page, pause it before starting the video.) Enjoy!
Here is a nice clip of a Turkish dancer playing zills (finger cymbals). Due to the nature of the recording, they are sometimes difficult to hear, but notice how naturally they seem to be part of her body while she dances and plays:
For many students the inclusion of arms seems to be one of the last pieces to develop. This montage of student improv offers some great examples of arm movements, and a little of double veil. I'm not sure what the fountain is about, but since dance is ultimately an art you will see "what if" explorations from time to time.
Whether just starting out or determined to master double veil, this video clip is sure to have something you'll like. The first two minutes illustrate how a beginning veil dancer can mix a variety of veil moves with dance moves, and if done with a group could be a very effective stage performance. The last minute is my favorite; she demonstrates fluid transitions, controlled spins and great visual impact with double veil.
Rachel Brice is THE name for Tribal Fusion Style out in California, and is amazing. Tribal style is actually an American invention; it's like an imagination of what tribal dance might have been like many years ago in those far away lands. Some tribal styles focus on interactive group dance, "fusion" styles have mixed influences, and a newer style called Urban Tribal combines the imagined past with the imagined future. In this latter type, you will notice more posing, popping and locking, a darker more mysterious music style, and little to no facial expression. Here is a nice sample of Rachel Brice's dancing, which begins with some Urban Tribal and then goes to Tribal Fusion:
And of course, no sample of bellydance would be complete without the Bellydance Superstars Tour, the ultimate in professional bellydance around the world. Here you will see a mix of costume and dance styles, group stage choreography, Wings of Isis, and what good lighting and background can do for a performance.
Videos of the Tours taken in various cities can be purchased; check out their MySpace page or direct website. I'm told the Paris show offers a particularly good camera view. About me:
Teszia Suhayla Amani Bellydance Instructor, Performer, & Lifelong Student
Oriental Dance, or "Bellydance" as it's known in the U.S., is an enchanting art form originating from lives and travels of people wandering eastern Mediterranean and northern African lands. The focus is intricate--yet powerful--motions of the torso, rather than feet or legs. The music is as colorful as the costuming, and the prop work as fascinating as the history. Together with the food and the people this exotic and captivating art form has enriched my life, so I am passionate about sharing it! I encourage anyone who has even an inkling of interest to learn more and give it a try. (It's not as hard as it looks!) The Beachside Bellydancers
