Name is Larry
I was born in Dallas, TX. in 1959. We lived in the West Dallas Projects near Singleton and Westmoreland.
I graduated from Medina High School in 1977, while living at Medina Childrens Home.
In 1982, I married Linda Hamilton of Lakehills, TX. and have four beautiful children. All are adults and on their own. Their names are Sam, Cory, Erin and Audra - in that order. And out of these four, I have three grandbabies so far. They are Colsten, Cory's son - Brianna, Cory's daughter - and Dylan, Audra's son.
At this time, we reside near San Antonio.

» Amateur Radio
The thing I enjoy most out of life is to be surrounded by fellow Amateur Radio Ops. Male, female, young or old. They are the greatest group of people I have ever known. I come across a bad apple now and then, but there's one in every barrel.
In general, it's all good.
I became interested in Amateur (Ham) Radio during my scanner buff days when I listened to local fire department and public safety frequencies regularly. I accidently stumbled upon a QSO in progress on the 146.880 repeater in Dallas, TX. and sandbagged for several days on other 2 meter frequencies. I then discovered that there was also activity in the 443 MHz. band. I found out that these were the Ham Radio portions of the spectrum by looking in the "Police Call" book from Radio Shack. I later found out how to get a license and be able to quit sandbagging and finally join in. Other than my four children and wife, it was the 3rd best thing that has happened in my life.
I became an Amateur Radio Operator on March 28, 1995 as KC5NOD while living in DeSoto, TX., a suburb of Dallas County, where I was active in RACES(#5341) and other special events. I upgraded to Tech Plus in 1997. It was then that I became active on 10 and 15 meters. I worked alot of 10-10 International stations and some 15 meter morse code (CW).
My family and I lived in DeSoto until July of 1998 then relocated back to the Texas Hill Country where my wife, Linda (KC5YYP), was born and raised. I became familiar with the local clubs and repeaters in the area and met several good Hill Country Amateur Operators. I soon upgraded to the popular 5 wpm General class soon after restructuring came about in 2000 and the 13 wpm requirement was eliminated. In 2004, I applied for and received the vanity call sign of W5LJM. On January 20, 2006, I finally achieved the Amateur Extra status on my license grant and became an Extra Class ARRL Volunteer Examiner soon afterward.
I am an active (if I can keep my butt in Texas long enough)ARES member for Bandera County.
I have three (3) good mobile radios. One is an ADI AR-147+ and the famous RS HTX- 212; a new Yeasu FT-7800R dual band mobile. I have 2 HTs - one is an ADI AT- 201, 2 meter only, the other is an Alinco DJ-195. I switch out antennas so often, that I have no idea what I own at the moment. I owned an Icom IC-706 (not mkIIG) at one time, and ended up giving it to a ham operator as a payment for helping me out. I have recently added an older Kenwood TS-120S HF radio to my shack, working it through a homebrew dipole cut for 3.850 MHz..
I hang out on local simplex 145.630 MHz. known locally as the Lake-Snake Frequency, and the 147.180 repeater, K5EOC. When the 10 meter band is "open", I frequent 28.345 - 28.500 MHz. to find a few 10-10 operators and exchange numbers with them. I'm not a "paper chaser", but I enjoy the activity.
I enjoy building homebrew antennas. My favorite of all design is the TV Antenna Yagi, made from damaged TV antennas.
I have served as a firefighter with Southwest Volunteer Fire Department in Southwest Bexar county. I am certified in AED and CPR, as well as other aspects of the department.
I was a member of the San Antonio Radio Club, where I had served on the Board of Directors in 2005. Happy DX! [more later...]
