Infusing contemporary African dance forms with jolts of high fashion and street culture, the mesmerizing Julie Dossavi from France presents a collection of solos and duets accompanied by live African percussion, voice and electronics.

Friday, May 08, 2009 8:00 PM - Saturday, May 09, 2009 1:00 PM ( reception following performance) These performances mark the first American Tour of this major figure of the Catalan contemporary dance scene with engagements at NY’s Baryshnikov Arts Center and here in Austin. "The most honest performance to be seen in Madrid this season" -Revista Diagonal Choreographer Sònia Gómez is known for bringing her personal experiences to the stage with honesty and boldness and in “Mi Madre y Yo” she shares the stage with her mother Rosa Vicente. Set to the music of The Beach Boys, Tina Turner and Kraftwerk, “Mi Madre y Yo” (in Spanish with English subtitles) incorporates text, movement and video projections with theatrical flare to portray the difficult, hostile, absurd, generous and tender moments of an intimate relationship between daughter and mother. Special Event – In honor of Mother’s Day, Dance Umbrella is offering a special $30 ticket for the Saturday matinee which includes a ticket to “My Madre y Yo” and a Special Luncheon at Z’Tejas with Sonia Gomez and her mother Rosa Vicente following the Saturday Matinee performance. La Víctima, captivates audiences with its vivid characters, powerful singing voices, corridos mexicanos (Mexican ballads) and stirring historical facts. La Víctima, (The Victim) written by El Teatro de la Esperanza, is a moving play depicting one family's history that is representative of the cycle of immigration by Mexican-Americans throughout the United States in the 20th century. A classic in Chicano theater tradition, La Víctima is performed in a unique bilingual presentation style (a blend of both Spanish and English) that Teatro Vivo is most noted for producing. The story personalizes the impact of policy and attitudes toward immigrants portraying a family ripped apart by US and Mexican immigration policies that impacted over three million migrants in the Southwest. These are pressing themes that are still relevant to the present time. Teatro Vivo’s production reminds us that history is never too far from the present.
