ThaiLinks is pleased to present Thai Takes 3: Independent Film Festival, showcasing a total of 26 films over 5 days, including over 20 U.S. East Coast premieres. A snapshot of Thailand's emerging and ever-diversifying film community as well as new voices from Thai Americans / Thai diasporas, the festival opens at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria as part of the Independence World Cinema Showcase from April 13 to 15, 2007, and continues at The Pioneer Theater in the East Village from Saturday April 21 to 22, 2007.
Coinciding with Songkran, the Thai New Year, Thai Takes 3 opens on April 13 with the U.S. premiere of Wisit Sasanatieng..s period piece The Unseeable. Sasanatieng..s Tears of the Black Tiger was recently released in the U.S., despite debuting at Cannes in 2001, garnering much interest. The festival will close with his film Citizen Dog on April 22. Thai Takes 3 also includes: the U.S. premiere of Cannes winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul..s short film The Anthem, commissioned by Lux Artists Cinema, Frieze Art Fair UK 2006; Invisible Waves, acclaimed director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang..s feature follow-up to Last Life in the Universe, again starring Japanese icon Asano Tadanobu and shot by cinematographer Christopher Doyle; The Tin Mine, presented by director Jira Maligool, which was Thailand..s official entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2005 Academy Awards; Innocence, the breakout debut documentary from Areeya Chumsai and Nisa Kongsri, presented by the filmmakers; The Dorm, directed by Songyot Sugmakanan, recent recipient of a Crystal Simorgh at the Fajr International Film Festival in Iran; experimental film shorts and documentaries from independent Thai filmmakers. Select screenings will be followed by discussion with the filmmakers.
Special guest speakers include: May Adadol Ingawanij, PhD and Thai film scholar; Kong Rithdee, film critic and correspondent for the Bangkok Post and Variety; Jira Maligool, director of The Tine Mine; Areeya Chumsai and Nisa Kongsri, directors of Innocence; Virada Chatikul, director of Boonkhun; Tana Sarntinoranont of Creamery Productions, male lead, co-writer, and producer of Blush; Aditya Assarat, director of The Sigh and first Film Protégé of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative Program with director Mira Nair; and Nitipong Thinthupthai, director of Krasob.
