Even from a young age, soul artist Thane St. Andrew was destined to accomplish great things. Born in Guyana, South America, Thane grew up in Canada, in a household where music was encouraged and celebrated and tracks ranging from calypso, soca and reggae, to disco, classical, and folk could be heard. After moving from his hometown of Calgary to Toronto in 2002, the imprint of this musical milieu could still be found within Thane's songwriting. Likened to soul sensation John Legend, Thane's singing style has been described as emotive pop music with rich, earthy, and soulful vocals inspired by such artists as Seal, Boyz II Men, Tracey Chapman, Nina Simone, Lionel Richie, and Alana Davis.
Thane has spent several months in the studio recording original material for his debut album, Palace of Love, released in late 2008 and has worked with a host of accomplished musicians including Steven Roe (lead guitar player for The BitterSweet), Colin Robinson (drummer for FeFe Dobson), Nick Czarnogorski (bass player for Kazzer), and Jake Payne (pianist for Colin Amey). Fatlabs producer, Vikas Kohli, describes Thane's work as "…rooted in a strong foundation of what makes a great pop song - one can hear the soul in his voice and the honesty in his lyrics."
Thane gained voice training experience through several years of choral performance and, in 1996, won an Alberta Black Achievement Award for Amateur Performing Arts after being nominated by his influential music teacher. Thane continues to study music through private training, actively participates in songwriting workshops, and is a member of The Songwriter's Association of Canada (SAC), SOCAN, and CARAS.
No stranger to performing, Thane has impressed a diverse audience across the country with his soulful style, from intimate locales to large festivals with venues including El Mocambo, The Drake, Harbourfront Centre, The International Centre, The Rosza Centre (University of Calgary) and The Jupiter Room (Montreal).
Thane's music has shown early signs of success in the media and has been spun on Indie Mix Radio AM 1580 (Los Angeles, California), iRADIO LA (indie104.7FM) and more recently Toronto’s CHRY 105.5FM. He has received acclaim by music critics in Japan, The US and Europe.
Thane’s single, Anybody Seen My Angel, has been included on The Best of DropHit 2006 Compilation CD and he was a featured artist on "The Kaave Show" hosted by Toronto personality Kaaveh Shoman and broadcast to millions of viewers internationally. In 2007, Thane received Toronto Exclusive Magazine Awards for Best Male R&B Vocalist and Best Website.
Most recently, Thane released his first music video featuring Walls, the fourth track off his debut album and is currently collaborating with a Montreal DJ, ever challenging his musical boundaries and experimenting with Electro-Soul and Disco House.
Expect the unexpected from this ambitious talent and keep your ear to the ground for future news.
