Though the guys in this band have been playing together under the name The 359’s for almost a year now, they got their start as The Bad Ideas. It all started in the summer of 2005 with Jon Stubblefield as the mastermind behind the project. The Bad Ideas debuted in Kansas City with a strong dose of hard hitting country rock. In 2006, the band was playing all over Kansas City and received a nomination for "Best New Band" by The Pitch, Kansas City's alternative weekly paper. Late in 2006, a hiatus was taken when two of the members went out on the road with another band.
In the spring of 2007 the guys reunited and assumed a new name in an effort to get a fresh start. The band chose the name The 359’s after the venerable Peterbilt truck. Like the truck itself, this band has a hard working, hard driving edge that leaves you feeling exhausted from the ride, but ready to get back out on the road and experience some more!
Three members of The 359’s grew up in a small farming community just east of Kansas City. The band is lead by vocalist/songwriter/guitarist, Jon Stubblefield. Like the legends that inspire him, Jon is notorious for his cigarette that slowly ashes away, while kept safely tucked in the head of his guitar. He draws the crowd in with his nicotine flavored voice as he hides behind his moaning guitar and the bill of his MFA cap. Quentin Phipps, a native of Cimarron, Kansas, plays guitar and sings. He throws down a dirty guitar rhythm and belts out a mean, West-Kansas vocal. Ryan Watkins is the driving force behind the beat of The 359’s. His explosive kick drum and straight ahead drumming style will have you waltzing with one song then leave you feeling beer bottle, sucker punched in the next. Last but not least, Justin Penney rocks out on bass guitar. He lends an often punk, indie, and rock influenced bass style that makes even seasoned musicians wonder “How the F%@ did he do that?”
The 359’s cannot be described by one word. With a combination of whiskey drenched rock, country, rockabilly and soul, the music of The 359’s goes hand in hand with boot stomping, beer drinking and whiskey shooting. Nothing is off limits so long as it's got some swagger or some kick ass rock moves.
