Owing its existence to the industriousness of Ramanan and Deepak aka machine, The Sixth element started
out as a prog rock outfit largely influenced by Dream theater and the likes. They met at Saarang(IIT Chennai), on
the stage of decibels for the first time, with an impromptu rendition of overture and some random prog riffs on a non
competitive basis along with maverick bassie Tanshuman aka Tman. The crowd invariably took notice of and appreciated
the odd trio, and this egged them to kickstart a band together. The idea behind the title of the band is almost obscure
now, whatwith all the lineup changes, but id like to think we are the sixth essential element that ties the Earth together!
Raoul Warren joined the team on vocals with his sinuous, jazz/soul inspired lines as did Varun on the keys, bringing
in an edge of refinement to their music. Sixth element did a bunch of smalltime gigs in their then hometown-Chennai at the Unwind
Centre among other forgettable venues. Pulse at NITK Surathkal saw the bands first breakaway, 'write-homeable' performance
in March 2007, along with several other South Indian Rocker Giants like Extinct Reflections, Nerverek, Afterburn and Phlegmingo.
This was also their last show together, as Sixth Element began to see the first of its many line up changes. Alok took over from
Tman, as did Karthik from Raoul. With their coming, Sixth Element began to see a slight but noticeable change in style
and focus, as Metal became the name of the game. The two, who previously did their parts for Zephyrus and Phlegmingo respectively,
brought in varied influences all the way from Dave Matthews to Pain of Salvation and Tool. An average cover at a small gig
would be a 'Home'-POS or 'Vicarious'-TOOL. Freedom Jam and NLS Legala 07, two more gigs with an excellent crowd and judges' response but no
'Pole Positions'. But heck, we said, we dont do music for the money! Three originals in the bag, namely Chimney Star-
with 'Raoul'tattooed all over it, the signature prog rock sound of the band, 'Guantanamo'-emotionally charged
and Prog metal to the core, and one thats as yet unnamed but would proudly subscribe to
the same genre as the second. With a 40 min setlist that they would ideally play anywhere, anytime, Sixth Element is all set
to hit the road again. Extremely passionate about their music are these guys, now based in Bangalore. Watch out for the new
Prog Metal Inferno, as they 'Unlesh the Fire'!
