  • Bio

ORIGINS Early years David Pais was born in Ovar, Portugal, at the 7th of May, 1985. Soon got interested in Arts, choosing Music as his own consort. He began composing when he was 13, with the help of freeware-samples and a lot of patience. Throughout the years, he's been developing his own creative capability, and in 2002 joins his first band as the main singer and lyricist. On that band, he meets Ricardo Mestre - bassplayer - and, on the last days of 2003, they both get out of the band for personnal reasons, and join forces to create Wishful Thinking, an electronic/industrial project, that would influence his already random-musical-composing way. In 2004, David begins to improve his methods of composition / production, and starts to create a vast colection of unfinished themes, that later on, would provide inspiration for his own solo-project. During that year, he moves to Tomar, and meets those who'd be his bandmates on Ashes - alternative Metal band. Soon he becomes one of the members, colaborating as vocalist and lyricist. 2005 The cell opens During 2005, David oficially begins his own solo-project, first known as "Mig", then altered to "The9thCell" due to copyrights infringements. He starts composing, recording and producing three albuns from 2005 to 2006: "Lone-Lee" (released in 6/6/2006) The9thCell's debut-album features 17 original tracks of progressive-metal that crosses many other different styles, such as electronic, hard-rock, orchestral and industrial. It includes many collaborations, such as Susana Andrez's on "Walking Ghost" and "The Sorrow Within", Eduardo Serraventoso on "Bitter Pain", Joel Pinho on "Into Goodbye" and Ricardo Mestre on "Inthrough". "9 Points of Seizure" (double-cd, released in 9/9/2006) The second album from The9thCell, bringing a chaotic disruption into both introspective \ interventionist sides of an ever-present fury through devastating tracks split in two cds, blending various musical styles into a twisted, perverted and sometimes nearly sick vision of the world. "Lovely Xmas Lullabies" (released in 25/12/2006) The third Cell instalment comes as a 9-track gift package of special Christmas Lullabies, as an homage to Christmas and all that it stands for on most societies. A satirical, controversial, twisted and definitively heavy album, that counts with two special guests that sing in two songs: Mano (from Xtigma), singing on "Hail Mon(k)ey!" and Susana Andrez on "Santa's on Coke". On that same year, he composes his first oficial soundtrack for a short-movie from Susana Andrez, named "Rapid Eye Movement". This was, perhaps, one of the biggest challenges to his creativity, having to create Music that would follow the images and feelings of the characters, also being totally symphonic - a long-loved and admired genre of this composer. By the end of the same year, he begins to record, along with Ashes, their first oficial Ep with the renewed line-up, finishing it on 2007's Spring. 2007 The hiatus begins During 2007, David composes his second oficial soundtrack, this time for Raquel Carrilho, for her short-movie called "Receita do Sossego". Meanwhile, he also begins his work for the new The9thCell album, and records several instrumental themes, leaving them on "hiatus" through an undetermined time. Still in that same year, he meets Joel Costa and participates on Headzum, as guest-vocalist on some songs for Maori Ep. Their friendship and love in working together grows, and they work together again at the beggining of 2008, for two more songs for the latest Headzum work, called Annica. This time, David not only sang, but also played guitar and created some new samples for the songs. In 2008, and after moving to Lisbon, David picks up his suspended work onThe9thCell, and begins to search for a possible job as soundtrack-composer for Cinema and Videogames. During this time, he invited three special-guests to sing on his new album: Rui Zargo (NoTribe's drummer) for a new song called "Pride", then Flávio (Oblique Rain) and Dennis (Sting Monroe), who both sang and added guitar-tracks in "We, the Pawns" and "Time Out", respectively. These songs will be released with the new The9thCell album. On April, sings on a song from Silence Against Words, the most recent solo-project of Eduardo Serraventoso (one of Ashes's guitar players), on "I close my eyes and feel", just as singer. The lyric for this song was written by Bárbara Teixeira. 2009 Back to business! After a long while without doing anything much serious on the music business due to the lack of space and time to sing - thanks to his daily job outside of the music industry - David starts working again. On the 25th of April, he releases the "Unlock" Ep, a 4-track demo from the new album, featuring a remixed "The Fashion Lovers", from "9 Points of Seizure", that was well recieved by reviewers. On March, he was asked to join the stoner-rock-band NoTribe, to play Bass and do Backvocals. In May of 2009 they record their first Ep together, called Primordial, recording a videoclip for the "Monster" song on December of the same year, directed by Nuno Neves. 2010 Back for good! On March of 2010, he once again involved himself with Cinema, creating a song for a Nuno Nevess short-movie called INK, an acclaimed piece of art thats gathering a warm reception worldwide. Then, in April David began recording the final vocals for the new record, split into three different acts, counting with numerous guests: Point Blank Range ACT I - (D)og (E)at (D)og released on the 10th of June ACT II - Glocapitalization released on the 5th of October ACT III - All.Merry.Cah released on the 1st of December. This new record set the new standards for The9thCell and David, both as producer and composer. In the midst of July, David involved The9thCell on Tylean's Me(n)tal Project, which consisted on Metal versions of her songs. David is featured on that collection with Green, a true 8-minute-long masterpiece that is completely different and heavier than Tyleans original. 2011 After a bit of silence on the Cell, David's restless mind began wishing for a new record, but this time, a new tribute / versions record that was released on the 13th of October, for free on the website. Known as "Metamorphic - Vol II", the new album has the following songs: Back to My Own Summer School [Deftones] Pollution [Limp Bizkit] Them Bones [Alice in Chains] Divine [koRn] Freak [Silverchair] Clenched Fist [Sepultura] Greedy Fly [bUSH] Wanna be Martyr [Full Devil Jacket] Zombie [The Cranberries] Becoming a turning point for the project, this record came to establish a new standard on David's production skills and his capacity to reinterpret rock anthems. 2012 Years after its conception, it was time to take another leap forward and expect the unexpected. The9thCell's discography became available exclusively on Bandcamp, including all the records, with the exception of both "Metamorphic" volumes and the original singles, which will remain free of charge. "Lone-Lee" is now digitally remastered, and "Point Blank Range" became a 2-Act record, being fully remixed and remastered. On the other hand, David released a solo record featuring his most disturbing Orchestral pieces, on an album called 'Vagabundos', which was released on May 7th, his own birthday - exclusively through Bandcamp as well. So, after the praised "Point Blank Range", from 2010, David decided to risk even further and explore his musicality to the extremes. After a badly slept afternoon, his melancholy started fueling his new compositions into a new record. Driven by sorrow, frustration, troubled relationships and strange events, he pulled "Galga de Zebra Ilesa" as a new original album. This time, The9thCell is darker, heavier, slower, furious and even more incisive. With a bunch of special guests to enhance the experience, we have Pedro Isidoro (No Tribe, Mordomo and Sounds151), Cláudio Brandão, Bruno Lopes (Slime Fingers), Marco Rosa (Ashes and Xtigma), Eduardo Serraventoso (Ashes and Saw), Samuel Luís (Hands of Guilt), Alex Vaz & Francisco Esteves (Springshoes) and Gonçalo Pardal. "Galga de Zebra Ilesa" breaks even more barriers on The9thCell's career, with two songs fully sang in portuguese - with a full album mixed with anger and passion - and the first ever contract with a record company, the portuguese "Infektion Records". Dangerous connection. You will be infekted by these new tunes More as the story develops... Carpe Diem
