The Engine Room is an independant record label and promotions company based in Leeds, UK......... Conceived in April 2003 as a way to put on bands we like in a venue we like, The Engine Room has quickly grown into one of the best, independant monthly gig nights in the city.......... The majority of Engine Room events take place at our spiritual home, The Brudenell Social Club, officially best live venue in Leeds 2005/06......... The label spluttered to life in 2004 with our first compilation cd of bands that have played for us. Done in true DIY style, cutting and folding all the sleeves ourselves, and commandeering mates computers to burn all the CDRs. It was only available at our gigs and in Jumbo (Leeds' best indie record shop), but we sold all of them (which ain't bad considering we didn't really know what we were doing!).......... A year later we made another one, this time doing it properly. We had 500 pressed and got them in indie shops nationwide, again, this sold like hot cakes. We have since released two singles, the first a solit 7" for Vatican Jet and The Smokestacks, and the second for The Somatics on CD and 7".......... More soon ...................................
Some of the bands we have had on at The Engine Room.............. The Sunshine Underground, The Smokestacks, Vatican Jet, The Somatics, This Et Al, O Fracas, iLiKETRAiNS, Tramp Attack, The Research, Robochrist, The Acutes, iForward Russia!, The Butterfly, That Fucking Tank, Itch, The Lodger, Dive Dive, Buen Chico, The Playmates, 10,000 Things, David Thomas Broughton, Keith, Champion Kickboxer, Samsa, YSN, The Twang, downdime, Parisman, Napoleon IIIrd, The Pigeon Detectives, Post War Years, Shut Your Eyes and You'll Burst Into Flames, These Monsters, Quack Quack, Voltage Union, Wintermute, Vessels, Micky P Kerr, Captain Hotknives..............

This is your chance to support truly independent music. It's only 70p to you but it means so much to us.
Damo Suzuki is a legend! Best known for his stint as the legendary Krautrock pioneers Can as their singer in the 70s, Damo now tours the world to hook up with the best of local musicians to produce stunning sets of improvised music. We cannot stress how good this will be enough - you’ve never experienced anything like a Damo Suzuki show before, even if you’ve been to a Damo Suzuki show before! This extra special show will see Damo backed by the collective brilliance that is Quack Quack and Napoleon IIIrd.
Quack Quack simply the best live band Forest of Sound have ever seen - so much energy, so much musical invention, so much skill... well, it's almost obscene.
One man empassioned alt-pop legend with his reel-to-reel tape player, Napoleon IIIrd is a man of skewed melodies, bouncing beats and a big bucket of inventiveness... and is simply ace.
Charlie Parr is from the same Duluth music scene that spawned the likes of Low and Haley Bonar, and his music delves deep into the back roads of American folk music, there’s hints of Robert Johnson, Nick Drake and Will Oldham in his playing, and a true from the heart power and clarity that is simply stunning. This guy is the real thing, and you can hear it in every note he plays, which would also explain why the people at the superb End of the Road festival ask him back every single year!
Neil McSweeney plays beautifully considered and perfectly restrained music that will delight fans of Low, Adrian Crowley, Nina Nastasia, Mark Kozelek, and Jason Molina.
Deftly fingerpicked folk loveliness from a local favourite - Michael Rossiter perfectly executes traditional folk as well as his own material, sings from his heart and gets the perfect sound from his guitar.
Thought we'd just let you know we've recently put up a bunch of tracks from our forthcoming album. Have you heard them? Please let us know what you think!
And if you like them come check us live. We're playing all over the country. The tour dates are up on our page.
The two albums are available, you can listen and get it by clicking on the player. Songs Like "Mon Banquier" and "Sylvia says", "You're a myth", or "No soy el preferido" and "Fuzzled and Fuchsia", two versions :)

SPOKES Manchester's Spokes will provide this fine evening with mostly instrumental, always captivating post-rock aceness. This is not your average quiet-loud band, they play with an edge of longing and sadness rarely seen in this genre and their 'People Like You Like You' album is indeed a fine piece of work that comes highly recommended. Recent slots at the Big Chill and Rockness festivals prove these lovely peeps are on the march. http://www. myspace. com/spokessound
THE FRENCH QUARTER One of Scotland's finest upcoming bands... soon to be up there with The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit. These young gentlemen cross Interpol-esque rhythms with soaring walls of guitar and a melancholy edge for good measure. It's their first time in Leeds so don't miss out. http://www. myspace. com/thefrenchquarter
THE AMBER SLEEP This beautiful string-based band centred around Graham Jones' brooding vocals create some quite wonderous acoustic passages. A little Nick Drake and a little Antony and the Johnsons and a lot of heart. http://www. myspace. com/theambersleep
Hauschka Having studied classical piano for ten years, Dusseldorf-based pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann's work as Hauschka is based upon a playful exploration of the possibilities of the 'prepared' piano. His resulting tracks are vivid, unconventional pieces made in a spirit of playful research-enthusiasm, which he's taken around the world - in the USA with Múm, in Japan with Colleen, and a debut, sold-out London show with Max Richter. Hauschka's music is a thing of beauty - intertwined melodies and rythyms that flit between gorgeously lush and complex and stunning minimalism.
Gareth S. Brown With influences as diverse as Eastern European folk music, funeral marches and jewellery boxes, Gareth creates gorgeous work of layered beauty with nods towards Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Michael Nyman as well as latter day travellers such as Max Richter, Yann Tiersen and Aphex Twin.
Saturday: 8/11/2008 @ The Holy Trinity Church, Leeds. Doors 8.30pm.
The idea is simple: eight bands play across two stages in the same venue - four chosen by renowned local DIY promoters Forest of Sound, four chosen by fantastic local independent label Gizeh Records. All bands play consecutively so the audience gets to see everything.
This is going to be amazing! 2 days of fantastic music on a beautiful site in the Lake District overlooking the southern shores of Lake Windermere, with a selection of excellent bands as chosen by us & the lovely people at Fell Foot Wood.
Passes for music and camping are a bargain at £16/person for the weekend or £9/day (vehicles are £2 per extra per night). Bookings with card payment must be made in advance by calling Barry at Fell Foot Wood on 015395 31014. There are only 170 spaces, so book early!
For this Forest of Sound we’re getting together with our good friends at Misplaced Music to celebrate the release of Gareth S. Brown’s new album, The Gallows on Misplaced Music (order here).
Bracken makes simply stunning music - walls of ambient sound, dark dub bass and atmospheres, destroyed and re-claimed found sound, beats that range from over-powering to perfectly understated.
Gareth S. Brown creates gorgeous work of layered beauty with nods towards Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Michael Nyman as well as latter day travellers such as Max Richter, Yann Tiersen and Aphex Twin.
Sketches for Albinos makes a sound that manages to be both truly heartfelt and organic, but also encompassing the majestic glacial soundscapes that would make the likes of Tim Hecker or Fennesz proud.
The Declining Winter are a new musical project, led by Richard Adams, the co-founder of Domino Records group Hood, and is influenced by the music of Low, The Durutti Column, Songs of Green Pheasant and more. They have recently toured with ambient legends, Stars of the Lid. Live they’re a wonderful, beautiful, pastoral experience.
Friday: 1/8/2008 @ The Packhorse, Leeds. Doors 7.30pm. £5 on the door. Join the last fm fun here.
Efterklang are astounding on record - a fusion of electronics, sea song, rock and ambience that envelops you slowly and beautifully. Live, they take this core of beauty and project it with such force in to the audience that it takes on a whole new life - every emotion amplified, every note laden with passion. If you caught them last time, you know you can't miss it again. If you didn't... well, you know what you have to do...
Bracken , led by Chris Adams (co-founder of Hood), make simply stunning music - walls of ambient sound, dark dub bass and atmospheres, destroyed and re-claimed found sound, all topped with vocals & lyrics from a man who knows his own heart.
James Yates’s solo show is something to behold - organic electronics, perfect drums, spot on percussion and mad-as-a-hatter inventiveness.
