Influences
Bandwise my influences are, The Beatles, King's X, Moke, Led Zepplin, Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd Big Wreck, Porcupine Tree, Big Sugar and many more.
Drummers that have influenced me are Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Joe Morello, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Mark Craney, Steve Smith, Gavin Harrison, Jay Lane, Scott Amendola to name just a few.
Guitarist influences are, David Grissom, Ty Tabor, Keith Urban, Jeff Beck, Gordie Johnson, Brian Wooten, Brent Mason, Eric Johnson, etc. I just love the chicken pickers lately.
Bass Players, hmmm...! So many but Paul McCartney originally, then Geddy Lee, Will Lee, Stu Hamm, Mr. Wooten, Doug Pinnik, and all those great funk and motown players from the 60's and 70's.
Singers. That's pretty easy. Most of the bands I like that are listed above have the singers I admire the most however I'll add Sheryl Crow, Sarah Mclachlin, Sting, The Wilson sisters (Heart), and so many more.
Here I am meeting with drumming great Dave Weckl and the amazing bass player John Pattitucci with my friend Alan on the left and me on the right.
Check out the videos I created for the band "King's X" and their fan club known as the "King's X Street Team" of which I am a member.
This is the band "Rainhorses" that I was a part of for many years, playing live at the Northern Lights Festival. Rainhorses recorded 3 albums and was a very enjoyable time of my life
My name is Glen Thomas from Sault Ste. Marie, Canada and I've been a drummer for almost 30 years but also play bass, guitar and keys. I have toured small pockets of Canada and the U.S. with numerous bands including, The Crank Shop, Wizard, Rhythm Method, Rainhorses, Scrooge, Ghengis Khan and more. I do a bit of vocals but I barely scrape by as a singer but I do give it a shot once in a while on my own tunes. After many years of playing in bands I got frustrated trying to get musicians together to help with the original material I was writing. Way too many critics or lack of interest. Not really their fault. Everyone has their own tastes, like we all know. Some musicians don't seem to see the vision of how a raw song in it's beginning stages can be molded into something better. This probably goes for a lot of musician's out there who do write their own songs. Anyway, I decided to learn different instruments and do things myself. Like many, I invested in recording equipment along with guitars and amps to help with my little song writing hobby. I have a lot of material writiten (bits and pieces) and hopefully over the next little while I can record it all. The problem is "time". It takes a lot of time to do all the parts along with structure the songs, mix them and yada yada yada.. You know the deal.
For me, it's just fun. I have no dream of stardom.. This is just a labour of love for me because music is my life and it's just enjoyable. If someone likes one of my songs GREAT, but it's not why I write. It's all about doing something you love and it's all about the challenge of creating something from a few chords.
I still play in bands. I have my main outfit known as Flat Stanley and I am part of 3 other projects, one being Finger Bang which is an internet group that exchanges our musical parts via email or chatline. This is a cool idea and a lot of fun. The band is located in Canada and the U.S. and have basically never met in person. We start out with a single track and then send it to the other band members who in turn add their own part to it. We are all using Cakewalk music software which we load all the band members parts into to form a song. It's COOL! I do the final throw together mix at my place. I'm also with a band called "Huckster" which does all original material and we have a CD in the works. Recently, I joined a band called "Wishbone" as a side project to the others I'm in and they too are recording a CD. I just recorded drum tracks for that. Oh, most of these projects have their own MySpace sites listed in the "friends" area or websites on the left of this page so have a look if you get the chance.
Thanks, Glen! I appreciate the birthday wishes! Haha, I'd send ya a piece of the chocolate cake I had if it weren't so dang perishable! (And delicious, seeing as how it has mysteriously disappeared and all.)
