A VERY SPECIAL EVENT IN TERRE HAUTE

..

SENIOR BREAKFAST CLUB OBJECTIVES: The Senior Breakfast Club seeks to stimulate seniors psychologically and physiologically by means of humorous activities and discusions. The reason for humor is quite intriguing, although humor itself is difficult to evaluate. The response to humor can be studied quite readily. We intend to use humor to invigorate and rejuvenate our seniors. We also plan on having discussions and lectures on topics that are beneficial to this program. Lastly, we will add as much fun to their lives and they can endure. PROGRAM ACTIVITIES: The Senior Breakfast Club rotates five regular activities throughout the year on a bi-weekly basis. The activities consist of lectures & discussions, music days & band nights, African American History Trivia, movies and bingo. The program integrates computer classes and bus trips as requested or available. The game of Bingo is played for common household products. It creates a sense of competition, which is a void in many seniors' lives. The second activity involves the seniors picking movies to watch as a group. Another fun senior activity is African American History Trivia. After the trivia is finished a brief biographical history of the person is handed out to the seniors. On a designated day a quiz is given and the senior with the highest score receives a restaurant gift certificate. This activity allows the seniors to learn information that was not freely available to them during their schools years. This activity also is used to aid their memory and thought processes. On music days, cds are played and sometimes a karaoke music is used. On band night we bring in a live band for the seniors' entertainment. Music day and band night gives the seniors an opportunity to reminiscence among peers. Some of the music genres enjoyed by the seniors are Motown, jazz, blues and gospel. In the past, middle school bands have played which promoted intergenerational programming. The final activity is where quality speakers are brought in for lectures and important discussions. This enables the seniors a viable chance to learn and re-learn about pertinent topics. Some of the topics are heart disease, breast cancer and sexual dysfunction. With these programs the seniors are able to further enrich their twilight years.

Charles T. Hyte's Bio:Vigo County Historical Society Historical Treasure Article Historic Treasure of the Week - February 18, 2001 By Dr. Dipa Sarkar Vigo County Historical Society Charles T. Hyte was a man devoted to education, community Since February is Black History Month, this Historical Treasure article features a man who made many contributions in the field of education in our community. Charles T. Hyte devoted his whole life to his pupils and his teaching. He was a dedicated educator who deeply felt the race problems, poverty and lack of community support for African-Americans. But he was an optimist and always knew that academic achievements and exemplary personal conduct will bring about true freedom. His golden rule was to know how to disagree agreeably. He was born Oct. 16, 1884, in Gallatain County, Ill. His father died when he was 6. His mother moved to Mount Vernon, and he graduated from high school there. While studying at Indiana Normal School, he taught to earn a living. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1925, Hyte taught in several schools outside Terre Haute but returned to become principal of Booker T. Washington School and held that post until his death on May 8, 1941. Hyte was a charter member of the Indiana Negro Society, Prince Hall Masonic Lodge, Odd Fellows Lodge and several civic organizations. He had no children of his own but took a deep interest in young peoples’ development. With his own funds, he financed a football team and gave them every opportunity to excel. One year after his death, a community center was dedicated in his memory. In 1942, the Charles T. Hyte Community Center opened at 1101 Washington St. Hyte Center still continues his advocacy work. It carries out various activities, health care services, educational programs such as tutoring and counseling, referral services, social clubs, sports and recreation. The basic concept of this center was to serve economically disadvantaged but many groups are using it for meetings, conferences and training programs. Hyte was a humble man with a big dream, which still is living on more than half a century after his death.

Introduction by one of the original founders:

My name is Franklin D.W. Brown. I am one of the original Hyte Community Center board memembers. Back in 1968 I was on the planning committee. We were in charge of the design of the Center. I also took part in the first shovel of dirt for the construction of the Charles T. Hyte Community Center. Today I still serve as a board member at the Hyte Center. I still work with many programs available to the community at the Hyte Center. We are always looking for volunteers to help us with the day to day functions at the center.

Finally, I want to give a special Thank You to Derick M. Lee. He is the designer and creator of this webpage. Up to now the Hyte Center didn't have anything like this. We appreciate the hard work and effort he put into making this webpage a reality. Let us not forget Laura Lee and the great camera work she provided.

Charles T. Hyte Community Center Association of Terre Haute, Inc

History:

The "first" Charles T. Hyte Community Center was located at 1330 Deming Street and opened on September 13, 1942 as a recreation and education center for the African-American youth of Terre Haute. The Hyte Center also served as a meeting place for the NAACP, the Indiana Negro History Society and various civic, social, and church groups. The Center carried on Hyte's legacy of encouraging African-American youth to excel as students and athletes. Charles Hyte was the principal of Booker T. Washington Junior High School from 1924 until his death in 1941. The Hyte Center's audience and activities expanded steadily from its opening in 1943. In 1945 and 1946, a new volleyball/basketball court was completed, a handicraft class was held for girls, boxing was added to the winter sports program, and a movie projector and screen were purchased for showing health and educational movies to the children. As early as 1947, the Hyte Center's Board of Control was moving toward autonomy from the City of Terre Haute. The Board began a 25-year period of leasing the Center from the City for $1 per year. Dr. Herman Sloss, president of the board, announced that the Hyte Center's Board of Trustees would work toward the construction of a new recreation building at 13 1/2 and Deming Streets. Throughout the late 1940s and the 1950s, the Hyte Center continued to meet the recreational and educational needs of pre-teens while developing programs for the teenagers and adults of the community. For example, on Friday evenings in the early 1950s, the Center hosted cooking classes for boys, sewing classes for girls, and social gatherings for adults. And in the late 1950s, the Center offered grooming and tap dancing classes, a singing group was organized, Bible classes were organized for adults, and a Golden Age club was formed for senior citizens. By the 1960s, after twenty years of serving the community, the Hyte Center's leaders and clientele continued to take steps to make it a more self-sufficient organization. Ozonator Hoke, director of the Center from 1953 to 1971, assisted the Center's teenage users in the formation of the Hyte Center Booster Club. The Boosters sponsored money-raising events for the purpose of financing improvements in the Center's facilities. Adult women formed a Mother's Booster Club for the same purpose. The efforts of the two organizations resulted in the redecoration of the Hyte Center and the purchase of new equipment and furnishings in 1962. In 1965, recognizing the greater need for its services by the entire low-income community, the Hyte Center Board of Directors took two steps toward the goal of making the transition into a multi-purpose organization. First, the Hyte Board reorganized itself in April with the help of the United Fund charitable organization. Then the Hyte Center's Board of Directors broadened the Center's scope to include the entire community, amending its constitution to read, "The purpose of this association is to foster and promote the educational, cultural, and recreational well-being of the people of Terre Haute, Indiana." The Hyte Center also spent nearly $5,000 on repairs and improvements to the building. The Hyte Center's programs continued to expand from 1965 to 1969. In the fall of 1965, the Center inaugurated a tutoring program for elementary age children, utilizing faculty and students from Indiana State University and Rose Polytechnic Institute. The Center also initiated homemaking and family living classes. The Center's financial support from the United Fund tripled. By the late 1960s, the Center was being stretched beyond its capacity. Thus the Center's Board of Directors began to actively plan for the construction of a new and larger Hyte Center building. In February, the Hyte Center's Board and the Terre Haute Park Department agreed that the city would contribute $80,000 of an estimated cost of $230,000 for the construction of a new facility. In June the Park Department passed a resolution in support of a "Comprehensive Community Center" to be located on city-owned property, folllowing the rejection by the group "Young Adults for a Better Black Community" of an offer by the Vigo County Public Library's to provide an old railroad car to be used as a library for the Center. The "Young Adults" successful effort was widely seen as the impetus needed to build a new Hyte Center. The Coalition Board for a New Hyte Center was created to oversee the funding and construction of a new multi-purpose facility. The Coalition Board was made up of representatives from the Hyte Center, the NAACP, CATCAP (Community Advisers To Community Action Program), the Good Neighbor Housing Improvement Association, and Young Adults for a Better Black Community. In the spring of 1970, the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development approved a $500,000 grant toward construction of a new building for the Hyte Center. The government would provide the money contingent upon the local community raising $200,000 from private donations. In announcing the grant, HUD declared that the Hyte Center had a 92% need rating, the highest indication of need ever given. The Coalition Board launched a fund drive with a dinner at the Central Presbyterian Church on June 29, 1970 for the purpose of raising $206,000 by October 1, 1970. Led by Franklin D.W. Brown Sr., the community achieved their fund raising goal. The new Hyte Center, located at 1101 S. 13th Street was completed in June 1972. and The Center's staff moved into their new headquarters on June 24 under the leadership of Director Wilene Deal. A handbook published in 1974 lists 20 separate activities offered at the new Hyte Center including breakfast and lunch programs, tutoring services, legal aid services, health clinics for mothers, infants, and children, and a comprehensive health education and referral service. By the late 1970s, the Hyte Center had opened up a medical clinic. In the Hyte Center tradition were things like Midnight Basketball and Miss Hyte Center beauty contest. The Charles T. Hyte Community Center is still in operation at 1101 S. 13th Street. The official name is The Charles T. Hyte Community Center Association of Terre Haute, Inc. The Hyte Center is very active in the community today. Currently there are still a few community activities in place. Two of the activies are the Community Soup Kitchen and the after school tutoring program. The tutoring program is run in conjunction with the Rose-Hulman Chapter of The National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. The tutoring program is also assisted by the Black Student Union of Indiana State University. The subjects covered are math, science, english and history. The Hyte Center is working ..ing people trying to take the G.E.D. test...... Today the Hyte Center has the United Way as one of their major sponsors. In the past the center has received contributions from other area businesses. Almost all of the work at the Hyte center is done by volunteers. The board members welcome community involvement. In the past the Charles T. Hyte Community Center held an annual banquet to acknowledge it's contributing organizations.

On April 12, 2007 the Charles T. Hyte Community Center continued their fight against losing the center. Mayor Kevin Burke and the Terre Haute Parks Department exercised no fairness in negotiations with the Hyte Center’s board of directors. Under the guidance of the current President, Franklin DW Brown the Hyte Center went to the next level. With board members, children from the community, students from ISU and other people from the community Presdent Brown led a march on city hall. The march was to let everyone know, including Mayor Kevin Burke, that the Hyte’s board is not going down without a fight. POWER TO THE PEOPLE……………………….. TH PUSH(TERRE HAUTE PEOPLE UNITED SAVING HYTE)

In May of 2007 The Hyte Center board of directors with their attorney Kal Ellis went to mediation with the Department Parks and Recreation board. The mayor in his efforts to take the building brought in his hired gun. Attorney Mark D. Hassler led the mayor's legal team. The park board in an interview with the Tribune Star said that they would come to the mediation with an open mind. This turned out to be such a big lie told by them. We gave them our proposal to stay in the building. Our requests in the prosposal was fair for all parties. After waiting for 2 hours the park board only wanted us out of the building and nothing else. Once again John L. Wright, Richard Shagley and Kendall Boyd didn't really offer the Hyte Board any real negotiations. Back in 2004 at the intial negotiations all the park board offered was the kitchen and the gym. They wanted the rest of the building. What kind of negotiations was that. The city officials constantly blamed the Hyte Board for the failed negotiations. If their intent was about fairness then no more tax payer money would have been wasted on litigation. Now who's fault is it really?

When the mediation failed we took it to the next level. We gather our supporters and marched on city hall. "Ain't no stoppin' us now, we're on the move"

ON JUNE 15TH 2007 WE WERE FINALLY EVICTED FROM THE BUILDING AT 13TH AND COLLEGE. THROUGH THE KINDNESS OF DR. JOSEPH SELLIKMAN WE MOVED INTO THE 2ND FLOOR OF HIS BUILDING AT 618 WABASH AVENUE....AND THE FIGHT AGAINST THE CITY STILL CONTINUES....

After moving into our new location the contreversy between us and the city continue. Under instructions from the mayor, city officials continued their attack on the Hyte Center board of directors. The city officials tried to keep the Hyte Center name on the building. They also stole our telephone number. Finally they spent tax payers money on buying up every combination of Hyte Center web domain names. These three attacks were successfully challenged by our director of communications, Derick Lee. Due to his corporate law research, Derick was able to fight back. We now have our name, our telephone number and all 35 web domain names back. This action by the city and the mayor caused Derick to send an email directly to Mayor Kevin Burke. The email was very powerfully written and went unanswered by the mayor. Below is a copy of the email sent to Mayor Burke. The courageous efforts of Derick is an example for all people here in Terre Haute. He said "We must never give up our rights". He has taken the Malcolm X approach to secure the Hyte Center's freedom.

What seems to be your problem? Are you not satisfied with just the eviction? First of all you really didn't accomplish anything by putting the Hyte board out of the building. Your team is in the building running the same programs we had in there. No new programs are going on in the building right now. Other programs that Mr. Ruark and staff are coming up with are not there own ideas. They saw our plans when we were at mediation and summary judgement. How convenient for them to copy what we had planned to do. Now let us discuss the dirty politics and personal attacks on the Hyte board. What is that about? You are going way too far and shows how weak you are as a man. I've never seen a mayor as bad as you are. Stop the personal vendetta against the Hyte Center. You have enough on your plate trying to keep the city financially afloat. You have $500k to work with now, when are you going to use it for the people. I'm willing to bet you mortgaged the building on 13th and College. It's funny how all this spending is going on and this town is financially upside down. Where are all the African American construction workers at. All these projects going on in this city and the African American representation is practically non-existent. There is a rumor that your man, Mr. Ruark is a former sex offender. It is rumored that he got in trouble at Rose-Hulman. If that is true then how can you have him working in a building which several young children come to daily? Stop the attacks and the other personal assaults. Try concentrating on taking care of this town. If not then, the best thing this town can do for itself is get you out of office. You are a terrible leader and not fair to all people. One of these days the law will catch up with you............If not the law then God will take care of you....
