Leigh, Alex and Ben are the North-London based trio called The Layabouts. They have been DJ-ing and producing music together for the last 7 years now.
The Layabouts produce soulful deep house music, with an emphasis on quality vocal releases. Their sound contains a strong musical element, putting 100% into their production and live performances. Along with the production the guys have maintained their dj schedule playing all over the u.k and overseas.
….Having released material on there own labels Soulworks and Healthy Records between 2004-2007 the guys were pleased to sign a deal with Kenny Dope’s label Ill Friction (a Strictly Rhythm offshoot). They were now set to renew their stamp on the scene with an original full vocal production entitled 'Stand up', arguably their best original work to date with a more deep sounding vibe and layered gospel inspired vocals with remixes from Kenny himself. After an extended waiting period 'Stand Up' was released in May 2008. The track went down really well with support from key players such as Aaron Ross and Defected radio. With 'Stand Up' reaching number 3 in the Traxsource download charts the Layabouts were chuffed to see their deeper sound developing and being received by some of the top boys.
2008 was off to a firing start after being asked to work on remixes for David Harness and Roland Clarke’s - 'The Deejay Is An Alien'. The team worked their magic on this package fusing their deep and soulful roots with this class spoken word delivery helping it edge its way into the top 5 on the Traxsource download charts. The track has also been featured on several key compilations, including “In bed with Space 2008” and House Affair Vol.3" mixed by Grant Nelson. Remixes were then completed for Stalwart Records: DJ Fudge ft Manni Hoffman - Keep on (Layabouts regroove mix) signed onto stereo sushi. The Layabouts had no time to waste after being asked to remix The Thompson Project - 'Messin' with my mind' for Label pioneers 'Soulfuric Recordings'. Using their original spin on the vocal the package worked its charm on the deep soulful club scene reaching number 1 on Traxsource assuring the guys that their love for what they do best was not in vain, it was an honour to remix the project some 10 years after its original release. They also followed the release with a guest mix and interview on Traxsource.com radio show hosted by Deli-G.
By now The layabouts were fast becoming favourite remixers for top heads in the scene and the work came in thick and fast with a remix of Dj Spinnas “Living my Life” for London Based Papa Records (home to the Real people) which reached number 4 on traxsource and Da Lata “aint your job” again for Papa. To finish the year off on a high 2 more remixes were completed, one being a mix for Haji & Emanuel which was a cover of a sounds of blackness tune which featured Beverley Knight and Brian Chambers called ‘The pressure’ (out on Big love music) and the other was a remix of a track called ‘Sunday’ by Jaidene Veda for label giants MN2S. Both tunes held there court staying in the top 5 on Traxsource for a good period of time. By now the team was generating a great deal of respect in the house music community and they were happy to accept a deal with MN2S following their success with ‘Sunday’ proving 2008 to be their best year to date!
With original tunes on the back burner ready to go out on Mn2s and Papa records the boys haven’t slowed down one bit determined to crack this year wide open like the last one after being asked to remix Soulsearchers classic ‘Cant Get Enough’ out on legendary label Defected. A true honour to say the least, with it reaching number 1 in the first few days of its release on Traxsource. In addition to the former they were approached once again by Papa records to remix a track by Tony Momello, who is one of the key singers in the Jazz Funk band Incognito.
This year The Layabouts will be focusing more on original material with their first release out on papa records in the near future…stay tuned!
