About me:
"The only difference between the Sane and the Insane, is IN and yet within this world, the Sane have the power to have the Insane locked up."
Hunter S. Thompson, Kingdom of Fear
The late Hunter S. Thompson made a valid point in this statement, which paraphrases the writings of indeterminist philosopher Michael Foucault. The only thing that serves to divide these polar opposites is two seemingly insignificant letters.
Ultimately, when considering the mental state of an individual; even after centuries of progress and research in the fields of psychiatry and psychology, we still only have the binary choice of two incredibly vague categories within which to classify them.
There is no middle ground between these terms. To modern medicine; the inner world of the human mind is one of stark contrasts, existing either in brilliant daylight or pitch blackness with nothing to bridge the gap between the two.
I however, am a spirit that lives within the twilight zone between those two extremes.
The concept of sanity versus insanity is totally subjective. In reality, these are definitions that are created and enforced by the majority of people against those who are amongst the minority.
If there were a greater number of people such as myself living in the world today; then perhaps we would be able to turn the lens of scrutiny upon those who examine us, and label them as insane.
In days of yore; those people whose thoughts and perceptions differed from the majority of those around them, were revered as Shamans. Individuals who had the ability to feed the minds and imaginations of those around them; with new thoughts and ideas that existed outside the closed loop of the accepted reality, expanding their awareness of the physical and spiritual world they inhabited.
Today, those whose perception of themselves and this world differs from those around them; are seen as being in some way defective. In need of treatment so that the individual worlds in which they exist may be assimilated into the shared reality of the accepted norm.
They are seen as having nothing to offer society, except for material with which to write new reports about the treatment of these exceptional individuals.
Those who once looked up to the Shamans of this world, now look down on them and seek to ‘heal‘ them. Those who were once aided by them, now see themselves as their caretakers.
Why is this?
Can this be justified solely by the belief that these people exist in a state that is detrimental to their personal health?
Or perhaps this is the effort of society to act in the best interests of its own survival; by stifling those individuals who are able to perceive a world beyond the constraints of the systems and laws within which their fellows are encaged, before they are able to gather enough of an audience to collectively begin to break the rusted bars around them.
