The People's Gallery is a non-profit gallery, a public venue for the art community of Riverside, CA. The gallery is located at 3643 University Ave. in historic downtown Riverside. We are housed in the second floor of the Harada Building. The building is owned by Andy Melendrez, who generously donates the common areas of the building to gallery space.
In the beginning of 2001, after Mr. Melendrez renovated the building, it gained its first tenants, artists Marian Semic, Glen Morris and photographer Jake Kimbrell. The three founded the "The People's Gallery" on the premise of providing a forum for artists to show their work. No hanging fees, no commission taken, absolutely free.
Kudos to Mr. Kimbrell for being the ZEALOUS (prev. typo-apologies to Jake) one to bark out. "Hey let's have a show!" And we've been showing art to this day.
The Gallery participates in several community events such as Arts Walk First Thursdays, Ghost Walk, Orange Blossom Festival (RIP OBF) and Dia de los Muertos a celebration of downtown arts and culture. The Gallery has hosted 2 Children's Christmas Card Shows for Cardenas Markets, provided the decorations for the Mayor's Ball (2006) and organized a scary, halloween chalk festival for the first "fanning the creative flame" festival.
Since its inception the Gallery has been a resource for the arts community of Riverside and the Inland Empire. In 2004, the Gallery incorporated as non-profit corporation and qualified as a 501(c) 3 public charity under federal and state guidelines.
In the coming months and years, we would like to expand the resources available to the community with workshops and larger gallery space. The Gallery is supported with effort from the resident artists, a dedicated group of volunteers (Marian's Minions) and the involvement of Riverside art organizations in community projects. Contributions from the community served, go a long way in helping with our goals and activities So, check the Blah Blah Blah page often, this is where the latest information will be on the what, where and how of our growth, commitment and involvement in the arts community.
