Music(as a former professional musican from another age), debate, politics, roleplaying (in all sorts of different environments, including professional), exercise, reading (all different types of literature), writing (one of these days I'll write my novel), philosophy/religion, and essentially any experience that would constitute a fulfilling life that is worth rememberance. In terms of outdoor activities, I enjoy kayaking, fishing, four wheeling, and I hope to eventually get into bowhunting (I used to shoot competition with firearms while in high school. I guess I'm looking for something that isn't as loud, and a bit more challenging). In terms of fine arts, theater is OK (as long as it is well done), as are concert performances and museums. Sports I'll dig into are cycling, soccer, swimming (I really do enjoy the water), and any other sort of stuff that my body can tolerate. Some things I hope to do before I die: Skydiving, white water rafting, more travelling (Eastern Europe, and more of western Europe specifically).
Music
Why do so many people still listen to the music of our elders, and what in the hell happened to musicianship? My opinion (and take it for what it is): A lot of modern music sucks. It is either gansta rap (which would be OK if it wasn't so damned repetitive), pop-country, (which shames people like Hank Williams and Johnny Cash), or the diva of the month. I miss lyrical artists, rock and roll, jazz, r&B, funk, classical, and just about every other sort of music that has gone by the wayside in the name of electronica, MTV, and Pro Tools software. It's gotten to the point that computers can do so much, there is no longer a need for creativity from the musicians themselves if they choose not to use it. I guess I should look at the bright side of this topic! Now I too can be a random wanker out there in myspaceland! My music profile is at myspace.com/wolfsrun! Hahahaha!!!
Movies
Don't ask me why, but I love movies where people are hacking each other up with sharp implements, preferably swords! Stuff like Braveheart, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Lord of the Rings, The Messenger (Joan of Arc), Count of Monte Cristo, The Patriot, and yes, HORROR movies. I also enjoy all sorts of other genres like comedies, dramas, action, war, and western movies. I've even been known to take in a chick flick from time-to-time, as long as the story is halfway decent. (But let's be serious about this for a minute...who out there DOESN'T like movies?). In terms of what I look for in a good movie? Something that..moves me. Whether it makes me laugh, provides contemplation, or even disturbes me, I look for this sort of context in a film. (The last film I saw that did this? Oddly enough, it was Rob Zombie's "The Devil's Rejects". A disturbing film to say the least.)
Television
Bah!TELEVISION, that source of pathetic pandering in the form of endless commercials(!), has become a CULTURAL WASTELAND! Have you ever seen the phenomenom when everyone is "tuned in"? Granted, I am not a religious person by any stretch of the imagination, but even I get the impression of the hypothetical metaphor which is the Whore of Babylon from the Christian Revelations! We have over 1000 channels, and there's STILL nothing on!TELEVISION is the destroyer of brain cells, the garrison of garbage, the purveyor of bad society, a perpetuator of poor taste, and in my humble opinion, this medium is not worth ANYONE'S time! NEXT....
Books
Hmmm.....I could probably fill this whole section with hundreds of titles. What do I read? Everything and anything, even "pulp fiction", which in my opinion doesn't get a fair shake from a lot of readers out there. Fiction, non fiction, history, biographies, how-to books, cultural books, religious books, philosphy, the classics, magazines, yup. As long as it's halfway decent, I'll probably read it. And since we're on the subject of books, I think there are a few out there that everyone should at least take a look at once in their lives.
Some Recent Reads:
Foreign Policy Magazine Yeah, I like to look at what the intellectually useless write once in a while! (Aw, c'mon, you KNOW I'm kidding!)
The Taoist Classics by Thomas Cleary I like dipping into these books almost on a daily basis for some useful quote. That's the beauty of eastern philosophy. It manages to convey so much with so little. My favorite translation of the Te-Tao Ching (Yes, that is correct) is by Robert G. Henricks
Don Quixote by Cervantes One of the greatest books ever written. I still go back into it from time to time. I don't know how many times I have read this book.
The Prince and Other Writings by Machiavelli: This book provides a lot of insight towards international affairs. It's still relevant.
The Six Messiahs by Mark Frost GREAT book! Nice plot twists!
The Essential Doctor Doom by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby Yeah, go ahead and laugh! Tell me...WHAT exactly gets adapted into movies more than any other type of literature?
(Also, I am writing my own book that combines elements of the New Testament, Post-apocalyptic notions based on current events tossed in with Native American culture. Now, if I can just get motivated to continue...)
Heroes
Heroes: My mother, my father, my stepfather, my stepbrother and sister, and of course my extended family. (I love 'em, and I am inspired by them, even if I don't call enough.) As for heroes, I try not to idolize or worship anyone. I respect a lot of work out there, but in terms of heroes, I suspect the greatest heroes of this era are those who perform their heroics in anonymity, helping people everyday not for fame or glory, or the money, but because they are good and decent people.
As for the strangers I most respect? I usually find myself thinking these words in consideration of random heroes and unknown souls who toil to make this world a better one:
Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is righteous will receive a righteous man's reward........And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple, amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward!
About me:
I am many things, but what truly are we as human beings? A collection of perceptions, thoughts, ideas, and notions? Whatever I THINK that I might be is probably not quite what someone else's perception is of my own person. I am someone who is comftorable in my own skin, but have an aspiration that this weak shell will hold more than it currently does. I believe myself to be somewhat intelligent, but I also know that there are many, many people in this world far more intelligent than myself. I hope to be possessive of wisdom, yet knowing that you don't know is one of the first lessons of wisdom.
I think that the one of the most difficult things to attain in this world is an IDENTITY that is truly unique. I can only hope that I am making headway towards this great aspiration.
Who I'd like to meet:
I would like to meet intelligent people that have profound things to say about the world we live in. I do not care from which walk of life that they might come. Be it the child genius, the doddering fool, the heartless heel, the beautiful loser; the rich entrepenuer, the angry artist, the hedonistic hellion or the homeless bum...everyone in my opinion has something interesting to say about life, and all that it contains. As a collective consciousness, the human race certainly has flaws, as do most individuals, including myself. But is it not these same flaws, these misgivings, frailties, and yearnings that make us desire to be more than what we are? What of the aspect of the individual that make them truly interesting, and worth listening to? (For with the flaws, come the purest of things as well, for oftentimes the pressures of life create diamonds from coal.) In the greater scheme of things, it is those upon the fringes that have just an interesting opinion as those within the thick of it looking out, for different perspectives produce different realities and mindsets. So with that being said...come one, come all, for there is nothing I enjoy more than some enlightening conversation!
