About me:
My friends have nicknamed me the supermom because they think I am the energizer bunny of moms. I'm not strong, I just have a lot of
responsibilities. I work full time, cook, clean, and take care of the health, schooling, and therapy of my two wonderful children that are challenged by having autism. (Autism is a brain disorder that often interferes with a person's ability to communicate with and relate to others. Autism also affects how a child perceives and processes sensory information.) Gabriel has classic autism and Seth has PDD-NOS. They are both nonverbal (very few words)but we use communication devices and sign language to communicate. If you're wondering how my life is different from being a "typical" mom watch the Autism Every Day video at www.autismspeaks.org. I don't agree with everything said in the video (You'll know when it gets to that spot)but it can be a good example of some of the more extreme things that I have had to deal with. The boys have came a long way and though we still see some of the issues (like stimming and vocalizing or as we call it 'yodeling')just not as much consistantly all the time as is shown. It reminds me and humbles me to the great acheivements we have made so far and gives me hope for the future. I have served as Vice President of the Autism Society of Southeast Texas for the last year and been a member for the last three. Thru them I have been able to bring my children out more than I could have ever done by myself and I appreciate all of you that are there to give me a helping hand when we go out with ya'll. They know me for saying that "Yes...It takes a village to raise a child but with our children we have to go out and find 'our' village" I love and appreciate the village of friends and paraprofessionals that are making a difference in my childrens life. (And my sanity!)
Who I'd like to meet: I'd love to pick Temple Grandin's brain! She seems to think more like my oldest who is HARD for me to figure out. Especially about the sensory issues and her being able to self maintain. Gabriel does a lot of stimming.
Love to meet new people and hear about their lives but have a problem with not enough time to keep in touch with all of them.
Thanks...he is a crazy kiddo! Yours are tooooo cute!!! I love all the pics! I always hear about them at the meetings, now i can put faces to the names! Have a great rest of the week!
