aerialist is lary hoffman singing and playing synthesizer and guitar while nikhil ranade plays drums. we are from arlington virginia.
history:
aerialist began in 1996 as a solo project of lary hoffman, who was then playing with a band called five state drive. after five state drive broke up lary made an aerialist record with some casiobeat/fender rhodes songs he had written (the last 2 songs on this page), and also some beats from five state drive drummer stevie treichel which were sampled and sequenced by mike ivey of "basehead" fame and made into songs by lary. after that, stevie officially joined aerialist and they made a record with a green cover in 1999 that this site's "what if we" is from. they played a little bit and then stevie moved to chicago. heartbroken, lary quit singing, listened to too much tortoise and started making vibraphone-focused instrumental music under the aerialist name (see the aerialist 2000 page on this site's top friends) until 2001 when his stupid sampler broke.
Lary and longtime buddy/aerialist recording engineer Nikhil Ranade have been writing some new tunes and reworking some old aerialist and five state drive tunes for guitar/synth/vocals/drumset are now playing out under the aerialist name. the stuff is more rock-oriented than the earlier aerialist stuff, as lary is primarily playing guitar while stomping on a foot pedal synthesizer and singing instead of playing mostly synths in other aerialist incarnations. aerialist is currently recording more recent material... we only play one song from this page at our live shows.
I was listening to the newer stuff and What If We came on and blew me into the past! I used to listen to that album quite a bit in my Arlington youth...Its all good stuff, keep it up!
