"What is that magic something I find in a great song that makes me stop whatever I am doing to listen when it is played? What is within the music that provokes a deep feeling within me? Why do only some songs wake my body and send me drifting and dancing in my head? What is this uniqueness? These were the questions I asked myself on that cold winters morning while I sat in the dark drifting in an imagined dream space. This was the morning I stumbled upon Akasha. And these were questions I sought to have answered, on some level, by the composer.
If you would ask me, I would not quite know how to describe Akasha’s unique sound. It is the musical and mystical brainchild of one mans tormented dreams and mysteries. The sound is as eccentric as the creator. There is no genre I could fit it into. There is no neat little label this music can claim. Akasha is a masterful blend of many elements of modern music as well as the not so modern tiptoeing into what I can only describe as futuristic. But these are only blanket terms used to describe something unknown. Akasha throws so many unique sounds, instruments, and emotions into the fire what is forged can often be impossible to define clearly. The melding of such abstract movements into such defining music is what Akasha is all about. The music is rich in composition and instrumentation. I had listened to three songs before I came back to myself mentally that winter night. I paused the player, sat back and had to take a breath.
My first impression of Akasha was not what I had expected.
That early morning hour I wrote a massive email to DP Davis, the composer and sole member of Akasha. I described my mental journey and how I drifted so easily while listening to his music. How each song took me on a magical ride to fantastical depths in my imagination easily. I described how quickly I was whisked away and how meditative, serene, and yet fully moved and overcome with emotion I had become while listening. I commented on the complexity and astounding detail he had given to each song. I complimented him over the fact that few musicians even provoked an emotive whisper in me, but his work moved a mountain within me. I had to know what kind of man created such music. What compelled him to write such deep and emotional songs? I was in a frenzy over every song. I began listening to the fourth song, the fifth, and by then I had discovered this was no typical rotation of songs. They played almost like a story. I felt as though I was witnessing moments in someone’s life, all garnered by the powerful stir of emotions brought about by each song. I typed what must have been a remarkable email coming from a stranger. I then put the song player on play from the beginning, got cozy on the couch and went for another ride. I had found a hidden treasure, the stuff dreams are truly made of. Or rather the music found me.
Later that day I received a reply to my massive email and came to learn much about Akasha and its creator. To even begin to understand the music of Akasha I learned a few basic things. This wasn’t the kind of music you listened to, to sing along to. There are no lyrics to be found here. What you can call words are created within the listener. This wasn’t the kind of music you put in to bring about a certain mood. The music is more like a seed, and within it a universe has potential to be born. This wasn’t the kind of music you listened to softly either. Only at full volume did I even begin to hear the complexity of the songs. To be fair, I would suggest playing it in a quite specific way, alone, relaxed, in the dark, and loud.
In his reply I also found that DP Davis was not going to give away many more secrets than that. He could only say that my experience was exactly what he had intended to provoke and that with each listener he hoped it opened up another universe for them. If only for a moment.
How poetic. How sincere.
I wrote again asking for more answers. I like any other devout music lover and trained musician would, wanted to understand more about its maker to fully understand the music. When you find a genius, ask him for knowledge.
DP Davis is as complex as his musical creations. His messages back spoke of a hermetic alchemist forever searching for the right combination of elements to create his secret wonders. A man lost within a dream plucking stars from the sky and playing them like celestial harps. He is a silent artist that prefers to be kept in the shadows so his music can give light. We corresponded in a poetic exchange that defined much more about the man and his music. But little can be said. Respecting his privacy, some details are mine alone. To give respect to his music, I can only encourage others to experience it firsthand.
So here I am left full of emotion but short on definition. To me Akasha can only be called an experience, a journey, and not simply a band. It is a soundtrack to life, an interpretation of experiences, it is what emotion is when heard. The raw ephemeral elements of creative thought waiting to be consumed by your ears and given life by your imagination. Each song can only be described as a chapter in a story, and the album a complete aural novel. It is your story, the story of your life. It is meant to be listened to robustly and savored personally. I can only say that each listener is sure to walk away a dedicated fan and will be coming back for more. For me, I’m already waiting for the next chapter, the next dream, that will take me away into the stars, if only for a moment. "
