Any university or college today has professors, students, a staff, high tuition, sport teams, fraternities and sororities and … a campus newspaper.
Every Wednesday since Nov. 26th, 1930 The All State has served as the primary source of news for APSU students, faculty and alumni.
When The All State was first published it was under the direction of Malvin Utleye, at which time the paper was printed every other week and only four pages long.
And even to this day, many people are puzzled by the name, The All State. Halbert Harvill, the dean of Austin Peay, submitted All State in a contest held to select a name.
According to an editorial explaining the name, “The inherent rightness of , as name for the school organ of the Austin Peay Normal School, should be apparent, we believe, to anyone acquainted with the purpose for which the normal school was established.
“The unique function of the institution is the training of elementary teachers for the rural schools of Tennessee … Thus, for a paper which heralds the activities of an institution which serves all the state, what name for fitting could there be than All State.”
Throughout the years, The All State has grown and evolved into a more professional and outstanding paper.
The All State has won multiple awards throughout its reign. Recent awards include 3rd Best in the South, three award-winning writers, one award-winning photographer and one award-winning designer.
