"The Flood is coming and there is no escape". This lyric from The Alternative Outfit's (TAO), The Flood, pretty much sums up the power and momentum with which the group is attacking tri-state venues. TAO has conjured up a live show that gets blood boiling, hearts pumping, tear ducts swelling, and chills firing down the spines of spectators.
Furthermore, in a rare accomplishment among live performance artists today, the explosion of energy TAO creates has been captured on the full length collection "Melancoholic". The album proves to lend itself to fans of rock, goth, jazz, alternative, pop, love, sex, pain, passion, music, misery, and brutal truth. Chris Sulit (songwriter/vocals/keys) teamed up with Bobby Kay (producer/bass/backup vocals/sounds) to create a record that is seemingly limitless in its diversity. It is a prime model of extravagant yet tasteful production.
Sulit's vocal styling tips its hat to the likes of Ville Valo (H.I.M.) and Daniel Victor (Neverending White Lights), but still rests firmly on his own very distinct, very versatile sound. The album has emotional ups and downs, takes energetic twists and turns, the only constant being an inexplicable character which comforts the listener as they travel through a world of eerie lullabies, angry melodic monsters, whaling lovesick creatures, and swinging oversized music staves filled with lustful eyes and tortured hearts.
Truly capturing the essence of alternative, TAO has seen the limits of the performance industry, and is coming to rip them all down.
Never before has delusions of romantic grandeur been more beguiling than on the new album “Melanchoholic” by The Alternative Outfit. Within moments of popping in the CD, we are transported to a darkly whimsical plane of manicured melodrama. Delicate vocal melodies weave around haunting piano and electric guitar, complimented by unique instrumentation and guest performers. TAO seems to revel in planting the seeds of various musical genres throughout the album, from the swingy beat of “Da Capo”, to the catchy punk essence of “Womb“. Given the dense nature of “Melanchoholic”, and the devoutly poetic quality of its heart on the sleeve lyrics, it is admirable that TAO sacrifices nothing in its premier album’s impeccable engineering. Despite its tendency to romanticize, “Melanchoholic” remains darkly and delightfully experimental, and is overall a truly enjoyable listening experience.

Chris Sulit’s new home grown and breathtaking band, The Alternative Outfit, has been slicing through the North East’s eardrums with their new album, Melancaholic. It’s a Bermuda Triangle; a stormy journey through tortured love and lost treasures. The tracks take the listener into movie scenes drenched by Danny Elfman and vocal harmonies rivaling Freddie Mercury.
What’s even more remarkable, the album is entirely written and performed by Chris Sulit. While the bassist, Bobby Kay, plays a key part in the production, from what I could tell after talking to the two of them, Sulit is the one who spent the days, weeks and months locked in the studio pulling at his hair until it turned purple. Check this CD Out!!! Especially my favorites songs; “Waltz of the Ill” and “No More Dreaming”.
