The American Black Lung is a band that find the contemporary culture in music bland and disgusting. Johnny Detroit wanted to display his roots with his love for soul and his admiration of 60's British rock 'n' roll like the Who and the Stones. While growing up in the isolated desert town of Catalina he met Phillip Holman, another misfit, who was not interested in pea-brained fratitude. these youths refused to participate in playing 'Who's The Daddy?' like most wasted youth do in small towns. In a matter of months, Dhusty Rhodes, who was fascinated by the foundations that the fathers of rock put down in Memphis and could not help but feel a mystic union with southern blues and would frequently talk to Easy E about how rock really needed a punch in the jaw.
After they got a couple tours lined up that were full of stories ranging from starvation, playing shows where kids in the crowd got naked, to their erratic roadie diving into Fat Bill's drums. Other tales involved yelling at racists, thievery, freezing to death in garages while the owners of the house are having a party, sleeping in the van and traveling through the humid swamps of Georgia with no AC, walking intoxicated through the streets of Hamburg while German Prostitutes are trying to cop a feel, etc. You can't help but admire the grime on the boots of this up and coming band... A band that does not mind suffering like the bands that saved their lives did. A band that is not afraid to stand alone in their own genre or be ripped apart or shunned by music publications whose only purpose is to keep the dangerous bands like ABL and our tourmate brothers at bay.
It almost seems like nothing exciting is happening in the terrible two-thousands and awful boybands with pretty haircuts and tattoos bands that just produce an over abundance of terrible music. But these guys plan to terrorize the industry with their punk D-I-Y ethics that they grew up with in the desert, where community is key and being yourself only helps you thrive.
So they shine on, and if you see them at a show near you, stop by and tip the whiskey jar. They have two records out, and rumor has it are in the process of recording a new one. And no, we do not endorse Rease thongs yet.
