InfluencesI am influenced by paintings, music, books, and other movies... I love reading, and I think that reading teaches us how to tell stories. I get more out of books than out of movies. When I read a book and see it visually in my head, and follow the stories and the characters from begining to end. That is good story telling. The trick is being able to translate good stories to the screen. That's much harder to do than most people think. I don't watch as many movies as I should, there is something about working on movies all day that sometimes makes the idea of going to a movie theater not so good. I would rather go out and hear live music, or have dinner with friends, and make good conversation. There is nothing better than a good conversation between people involved in all of the arts over a bottle of cheap wine. Close your eyes and imagine you are in Paris in the 1920's sitting at a table with all of those artists that were there. James Joyce, Picaso, Beckett, Gertrude Stein, Magritte, Kay Boyle, amd all the others. I know I am rambling, but as thinking human beings we are influenced by things all around us. I know I am influenced by George Lucas and Steven Speilberg. I think most of their work sucks and I never want to do anything like it! That is an influence.
DirectorsOrson Wells, John Sayles, Sergio Leone, Fritz Lang, Howard Hawks, John Huston, Clint Eastwood, Todd Haynes, Jonathon Demme, Jon Jost, Beth Harrington, Brian Johnson, Byrd McDonald, John Ford, Jim Jarmusch, David Lynch, Milos Forman, Yoshima, Werner Herzog, some Bergman, some Felini, Thomas Vinterberg, David Wild, Fassbinder, Hitchcock, Murnau, Eisenstein, Pudovkin, Bud Boeticher, Sam Peckinpah, this list can go on... And I probably misspelled a few names.
AwardsI've won a few, but I'm not a big fan of them... It's about the work, that's all I care about anymore. That being said, my films have been shown at Film Festivals all over the world, including London, Edinburgh, Sao Paulo, Chicago, Aspen, Cinequest, Black Maria, Sundance (short), Mill Valley, Virginia, (are all of these still around?), the first (and only) Dysfunctional Family Film Festival, Desert Reel... I know there's more. My films have also been show on PBS, The Learning Channel, Canadian and Austrailian Televison. Miramax and Columbia Pictures both took ads out in the trades pushing me for an Oscar nomination for my Sound Design work on Good Will Hunting and Finding Forrester respectively. I didn't get a nomination, but I kept copies of the ads. All of this and $4 gets me coffee at Starbucks.
FestivalsI actually stopped entering film festivals a couple years ago. I don't see the purpose anymore. You pay a bunch of money to submit your movie, the movie that you raised the money for, and sweated blood to make. Then you get a form letter from some asshole who says your movie doesn't fit in with their festival. And they keep your money! I think most of the big festivals won't take your feature unless you have some big name in it. That's not exactly "indie" is it? I tour with my films. I book my own screenings at various venues all over the country, get in to my van with my faithful dog Moses and we hit the road for 8 weeks at a time twice a year. I am kind of like a punk band, without the music, and no punks. I do appear at some Film Festivals teaching work shops and my own subversive brand of Real Independent Filmmaking. I really love Indie Memphis, it's a great film festival for Southern Filmmakers and they do it right. I'll be doing a work shop there again in October 2006. Desert Reel in Midland, Texas is also great. A festival run by people who love movies! Oh if they could all be like this again. If you have a festival, invite me to do a work shop, you can also show some of my movies if you'd like, I'm open, and my rates are reasonable... Otherwise I am just going to have to come to your town and book my own venue. So just make it easier on yourself, and me. Book me!
Professional AffiliationsI used to belong to AIVF, but they are shutting down. I belonged to IFP/LA, but they became too cool. I also belonged to FAF, but I am kinda broke these days. I should re-join, they are a good group. I'm just an Independent anymore. I don't think I play well with others. I will now only join a group that offers decoder rings. check out www.angryfilmmaker.com

    Angry Filmmaker's Interests
GeneralArt of all types. Books. History. Music. Cars.
MusicDrop Kick Murphy's, Warren Zevon, Mozart, Everclear, The Who, Weezer, Social D, NOFX, Dylan, Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, 44 Long, John Doe, X, The Clash, Jethro Tull, AC/DC, Stiff Little Fingers, Minor Threat, Fugazi, I can go on, but mostly troublemakers, weirdos, and angry people... with a chip on their shoulders.
MoviesI like all different types. I just don't see as many as I used to. I'm working here...
TelevisionI got rid of mine. I spent too much time watching and not doing.
BooksI usually read 3 or 4 at a time. Fiction, non-fiction, art and biography. Some politics. Lots of the Classics. Life is too short and there are too many good books out there... Never Self-Help Books. I am afraid I would find out how screwed up I really am...
HeroesThere are no Heroes. Just people in the right place at the right time who end up doing amazing things.
