In 1986 Geoff Marshall formed the first Antimatter lineup in Toronto, Canada.
The band released two cassettes, 1986's self-titled effort and 1990's Amorphia. There was probably more but I forget. A great many players accompanied Geoff on stage throughout this period. Antimatter played at all of Toronto's most famous and infamous venues throughout the 80's and 90's. After performing a punk/grunge version of Jesus Christ Superstar at the second Lolapalooza(more on that later), Michael "Rosie" Rosenthal (drums) and Michael "Blitz" Kaler (bass) joined in the early 90's, completing the Antimatter sound. Actually now that Ben Mueller-Heaslip's joined us ..s our sound is really complete. Really, really complete. Now if we just added a string section...
After one album (Afterthought 1995) and an abandoned rock opera the band went on haitus (Geoff went Raving meaning jungle parties, not raving like Sid) from 1996 until 2004 when initial work on a second album "BeachHead" began.
2006 saw Antimatter in the studio recording "BeachHead", the most anticipated album since the BeeGees "Odessa". Really.
And now a word from Geoff:
In 2007 I finished BeachHead. Then after a number of setbacks I decided to move to Montreal. I've been here for over a year now and have a new band called The Angry Parrots, a new EP and a new video. It was a hard decision to make but once you hear the result I think you'll agree I made the right choice. To follow my further musical adventures please go to www.myspace.com/theangryparrots.
Rosie is now drumming for Sunparlour Players, Ben has his Parkdale Revolutionary Orchestra and Blitz continues to rock with his Ugly Bug Band, all worth checking out.
And what about BeachHead? Blitz likes to think of it as the "Lost Antimatter Epic" and I tend to agree with him. I'll be making it available soon at www.chromacide.com as a free download under the Creative Commons license. How subversive is that?
I want to thank all the wonderful musicians that played with Antimatter over the years and most of all you lovely people who have and continue to support me and my bandmate's efforts. So truck on over to www.myspace.com/theangryparrots and continue with me on my madcap montreal musical quest!
Oh and to that Irish band, you can have the name, okay? Good luck with that.
Excelsior
Geoff
"Also hugely enjoyable, highly original AND psychically useful is the
music of Australian duo The Scrapes, whose fiery epic guitar and
abandoned Mithraic fiddle pieces evoke images of lost Keltic lands
inundated by the oceans, lost Iberian & Armorican sea peoples and
lost times from beyond the beyond." Julian Cope
