InfluencesTHINGS PEOPLE SAY:
"[CLATTERING INDIE FOLK] With more and more bands in town learning about the power of acoustic instruments, we should be thankful they can wrench some great sounds out of them. The quintet known as the Ascetic Junkies does just that by introducing the stomping joy of bluegrass and country into its navel-gazing pop (à la Tilly and the Wall but without that silly tap dancing thing). The resulting music, as heard on the band's debut, One Shoe Over the Cuckoo's Nest, has quickly marked it as one of the best young groups in Portland." -ROBERT HAM, WILLAMETTE WEEK

"(Windows Sell the House is) a great example of the modern bluegrass music that's been growing all over the country, from the deepest deltas of bluegrass country to the edges of the country, like Portland, Oregon... One of the things I love so much about modern independent music is that there are no genre restrictions. You can have a song called "Dracula" and not be goth. You can be from Portland and play bluegrass. It's a cool new world, as far as music is considered... The Ascetic Junkies have solved the problem of always being locked out. They now have no doors or walls." -CERULEAN'S LOVE OF MUSIC

"...what sticks out most is the fun they create no matter how slow chords move or how quick the spoons clap. One Shoe Over The Cuckoo’s Nest brilliantly comes off as vocalists Kali Giaritta and Matt Harmon’s ultimate love letter to one another." -RON TREMBATH, FENSEPOST

Sounds LikeU2 combined with alanis morissette, according to one guy. we disagree whole-heartedly, but we think it was meant as a compliment.

THE ASCETIC JUNKIES: One Shoe Over the Cuckoo's Nest
One Shoe... physical copy on CD Baby

One Shoe Over the Cuckoo's Nest on iTunes

(on the US, UK, EU, NZ, AU, JP, and CA stores!)

we are about to start recording new things.

(in lieu of a bio)
The Ascetic Junkies are what we eat. Here are some things that we like:
-bluegrass
-stomping and clapping
-being in love
-synthesizers and electronic music
-feeling skeptical about people who think they've got the world figured out
-loud things that make you feel like something
-parties
-dancing
-the last two items combined
-guacamole and bell peppers
-combining words to try to describe our genre
-Portland
-pop
-Boston
-banjo
-being louder/more energetic/more whiskey'd than the word "folk" suggests when we play live
-many local Portland bands

Current status:
-Still enjoying self-released 2008 album One Shoe Over the Cuckoo's Nest (iTunes, CD Baby)
-Lost a legal staring match with Shel Silverstein's lawyers. If you make friends with us and ask us nicely, maybe some day we'll play you the song we made out of one of his poems (in a non-commercial, non-public setting, of course)
-Planning a couple summer shows and recording of album 2. Stay tuned for video updates/song demo previews/live clips/etc.
-Getting excited for the Naked Bike Ride

Howdy,

We are The Chuckies from KBA/GBG, Sweden & we are proud to get to know you!

Our swell debut album is released on white 12" vinyl by www.myspace.com/tornadoriderecords. The CD version will be released by Nicotine Records this summer! Digital downloads are available everywhere, for example iTunes & Amazon.
We will celebrate these two cool releases with a mini-tour in Italy late september, check our MySpace page for updates on this. Wanna help out? Let us know!
