HOPEFULLY THIS WILL BE JUST A RESPITE IN THE WHOLE SCHEME OF THINGS.
The Athenian Mercury, as a musical entity, was formed in early 2004 by Chris Jones. The origin of the name was taken from the title of a 17th century newspaper from London which had a life span of only four years. Lyrically, all songs are centered around historical themes with the goal being to use them as a backdrop to formulate ideas and feelings about the human condition and how we handle controversial situations. Some of these themes, most of which can be found on "The Vanity of Human Life E.P(April 2006), include The Witch Trials at Salem, the bloodiest one day battle of The Civil War(Sharpsburg), a look at Puritan living via the life of Samuel Sewall, and the demise of pirate Benito DeSoto and gangster John Dillinger.
As a collective, our goal is to write and share music that we are proud of. Our hope is to be accessible but without compromising originality and artistic integrity. We draw influence from a variety of styles, most notably, post-hardcore, metal, country/western, and classical. Comparable bands include Beloved, The Bled, and Funeral For A Friend.
