The Authority Radio Show!'s Companies
WLIE 540AM Deer Park, NY US Radio Show Host "The Authority" Radio Show!
May 2006 - October 2006
WGBB 1240AM Babylon, NY US Radio Show Host "The Authority" Radio Show!
“The Authority” Radio Show came to fruition after creator, Chris Catania, had finished his education in Broadcasting. Chris is a great example of the everyman…with an offbeat attitude and caustic nature. A fan of various people in the Radio Industry from Howard Stern to Opie and Anthony, along with television greats like Johnny Carson, and Comedian, Andy Kaufman, Chris wanted to assemble a broadcast team together to entertain and have lots of fun doing it. He reached out to some folks he was familiar with and pitched the idea for the show: a modern day variety show that incorporated pop culture, sex, and current events. A show everyone could relate to, to some extent.
After some personnel rotations, “The Authority” hit the airwaves on WLIE, a local Long Island Station. They acquired a small fan base via the social networking site, Myspace, and this audience began to grow. They began to book well known comedians, such as Becky Donohue (HBO, Comedy Central) and Michelle Buteau ( HBO, Best Week Ever, Comedy Central, Last Comic Standing, and various t.v. commercials). They also rolled the dice with some more risqué guests, such as XXX Legend, Inari Vachs, and host of local adult entertainers and models. As the guests grew so did their colorful differences….they went on to host: Boxers, Paranormal Investigators, Controversial Web hosts, Hypnotists, Professional Wrestlers, Psychics, and much more. With the success they had on WLIE, they were also able to use their notoriety to host two very successful cancer benefit shows for charity at Governor’s Comedy Club.
Unfortunately, as time passed, “The Authority” hit a speed bump. WLIE had changed format to an all religious station. With their tongue in cheek commentary and daring content, “The Authority” no longer had a spot on the station. Personnel had come and gone and after a sabbatical, Chris, wanted to get the show back together….bigger and better than before.
Chris had announced a contest on Myspace for a new female co-host, there were many responses, but ultimately, Jen Codi was the one who made the cut. With a raspy voice, keen intellect, and devilish demeanor, Jen, became part of the crew.
The two honed their skills together on some online audio sites like Lipodcastnetwork.com and Velocity Radio, but missed the excitement and exposure of terrestial radio. Jenn and Chris decided to move forward and thought maybe adding some members might enrich the show.
Chris reached out to a few of his friends in the broadcasting field and added two more members to the group. Time went on, and while on WGBB, the members they brought in decided to go in different directions, leaving Jenn and Chris to go forward. This decision actually enhanced the show, as Chris and Jenn really began to gel as a unit.
They went to add an intern named Matt and carried on. With a new direction, “The Authority”, raged forward hosting all manner of guests, such as Author Jack Levin, Radio Personality / Author / Psychologist ,Dr. Judy Kuriansky, Reality Stars Niki and Ambre from “Rock of Love 2”, Comedian, Joe Starr, and more.
"The Authority" also did some charity events to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Working with many of their sponsors, they donated time for a cause they felt very passionately about.
“The Authority” had a great level of success on WGBB, and did everything they could hope to accomplish there. They had a loyal cult following, great sponsors, but wanted to take the time to access their direction in order to deliver the most high quality shows possible.
Time passed and the team decided to do one Last Run on WGBB. The show came back this past December (2008) and the crew put on some of the best shows they ever have. They had guests such as, Greg Grunberg (“Matt Parkman” from NBC’s Heroes), Zane Lamprey (Host of “Three Sheets”), and many more.
It was a fun time (12/08-2/09), but for now has come to an end. If you’ve missed a show or want to revisit, please explore the page for some links to archived shows. You’ll also find some rare shows from the program’s early years on WLIE and online sites.
Thanks to our sponsors, our guests, and above all, those who took the time to listen.
- “THE AUTHORITY”
With the end of the show, I got to thinking…I haven’t really posted any of “The Authority’s” older shows. Prior to WGBB, “The Authority” Show was heard at different locations. I thought since there were a bunch of shows from the past, that I’d open the vault and post them here for anyone who might be interested.
WLIE, was our first home. WLIE used to share a building with another radio station that I (Chris) and friend, Becky Meszaros worked for. Becky got me the job doing some board-op’ing and she did production. We worked in a tiny room for hours at a time and had a lot of fun goofing around. One day I thought about maybe doing a show down the hall at WLIE. Becky thought it would work, so we went forward with it.
We went through a process of sifting through people who we could work with and the team changed a bit, but I think you can hear we had a lot of fun doing the shows. The shows were a bit raw and unpolished, but then again, so were we.
During this time we had multiple Psychics, a Hypnotist, Comedians, a Dominatrix, XXX Stars, and more! We also did a lot of dares and in-studio challenges. Fun stuff.
XXX Star, Inari Vachs
S&M Show
Adult Entertainer, Gina DePalma
First Psychic
Hypnotist
Comedian, Becky Donohue
The Boxer / Actor
Creator of “Getoffourisland.com”
Second Psychic
There were more shows done, but since over the years, they’ve changed hands, this is all I had from WLIE. If more pop up, I’ll be sure to add them.
After WLIE, I didn’t know what, if anything was next for “The Authority”. I had spoken to some people and decided to try some internet radio stuff. I had known of this comedian, Duncan Jay, and we did some work together in the studio for some sites online. You’ll also hear Becky Meszaros in a few shows, too. Note: Some of these shows have some colorful language in them, so just keep that in mind.
One of the bits we did was a search for a female co-host for the show. We sent out bulletins on Myspace and had a few responses. We brought a bunch of women came into the studio each week and we put them through the motions, and ultimately, the winner came out of it. The winner was Jenn.
Check out some of these rarely heard shows and see how Jenn won the crown and started in with “The Authority”.
Adult Entertainer, Traci Islands
After we put the brakes on the whole internet thing, we regrouped and Jenn and I decided to go forward. We tried putting some people together and after a while it just wound up being just Jenn and myself, which I think was the best situation.
Initially, upon coming to WGBB, we hit a wall in regard to some of the topics we could cover and the ways we could express ourselves. This was somewhat frustrating. Over time, things had changed a bit and I think we put out some really fun shows and had a great support team of interns (Matt, Gina, and Tamara) helping us out. We also had some great guests.
Before we get started, we think it's only fair to mention that without a doubt, that our Psychic friend, Melanie Murphy, was by far our favorite psychic that has appeared on the show.
Her readings were hugely popular, accurate, and she was a very good friend of the show. Unfortunately, due to some issues with our audio library, we were unable to post her appearances on WGBB as of yet. We're still trying to get that up, but in the meantime, we could not recommend Melanie Murphy enough for any of your psychic needs or inquiries. She's a fantastic psychic and a very cool person.
Check her out: www.myspace.com/thegoddessinme (also see our top friends)
Now back to the show...
Our first show back, we were supposed to have Kimberley Locke from American Idol / Celebrity Fit Club….but she flaked on us.
Actor, Greg Grunberg from NBC’s Heroes
Our Holiday Show
Interview with Author, Fitness Guru, John Basedow
Comedian / Actor, Joe Starr
Ambre Lake, Winner of Rock of Love 2
Zane Lamprey, Host of “Three Sheets”
Niki from Rock of Love 2
There were a few shows from WGBB that were not accounted for early on, and there are some more current ones coming, but if any pop up that are not on, we will add them.
Hope you enjoyed this little overview of a show we enjoyed being part of.
