   About the babalas
There is a rather divided notion that the force behind the universe is love. Love, they may argue, is evident in every flower, every sunset and in every smile. Love has been the inspiration of countless poets, musicians and philosophers over the ages. The lads mothers could only wish that the force behind The Babalas was love- the force behind the humble beginnings of this band, according to sources closest to them, has unanimously been cited as lust, in its most affectionate form. The seeds of The Babalas were sown outside a school boarding hostel in rural Africa, where Taylor (tunes/strings) had developed a fancy for a lass a little younger than himself. Not only was the larger-than-normal age difference a hurdle for a romance, but the fact that Taylor held a position of leadership in his school severely dented his chances of enjoying a little passion- the College community would not have approved. Unable to express himself in any other way, Taylor took to learning the guitar with the hope of serenading his young goddess before the end of his school career- one measly week away. While Taylor should have been studying trigonometry and native languages, he was quietly strumming the E-minor/A-major chords of the Shocking Blue classic, Venus, in his hostel room, so as to not alert the boarding house master, who was incredibly stressed out by that time of the year. Two weeks later (after a not-so-stellar performance in the breakfast hall), Taylor had arrived in Australia to start a new life. Still intent on becoming a kamikaze-style rugby player, Taylor attended the University Rugby Team trials. One high-tackle too many left Taylor absolutely fuming. After storming off the field (and letting everybody know what he thought of them) Taylor sought the refuge of the tavern. There he met a bloke called Lex who was disillusioned with his future prospects at the "Ultimate Frisbee" club. Over a few milkshakes, Taylor discovered that Lex had been a drummer for a few years, and was looking to form a band. Taylor lied and told him he could play the guitar. All he needed to do was acquire the instrument and learn how to play it properly. An upcoming birthday solved the first problem...as for the second; well let's just say he is perfecting the art as you read this. Vincenzo was a classically-trained bass player before he started high school, and became acquainted with Taylor through first-year accountancy lectures at University. Many of these lectures were spent discussing music, travel, women and wine, so it was only a matter of time before Vincenzo joined the duet. Now a handsome threesome, the lads have performed at numerous music/art festivals, clubs such as Mojo's, The Rosemount and The Leopold Hotel, university gigs (including their legendary guerrilla gigs in the international student village), battle of the band contests and house parties. The raw, scrappy guitar riffs are met with precise, disco-lovin bass lines. The combined effects of these, helped along with tremendously loud thumping from behind are a marriage made in heaven for the discerning listener. The vocals reflect a colourful state of mind of the singer; the insomnia caused by lucid recurring dreams (Lolita Diehard) and his bizarre addiction to daytime soap opera Days of our Lives (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang). This is music made for that goddess back in Africa. This music is lust as it was meant to be.

Hey Babalas. Thanks for responding to our current Friends drive and adding Bands@Manjimup. We are doing this because we have a few really exciting events coming up like our recent concert, on Friday 20th, featuring Elora Danan (photo below) on their debut album tour, Manji prog rock band Ashoka and Perth ambient rockers Laced Affair. It was a high energy show with fantastic sound, and those who came got to meet the bands for more than an hour afterwards. The pictures are now up as a slideshow. Check them out at the top of our profile.

Next, we'll be hosting the biggest regional event in this year's WAMi Festival calendar, on 22nd May. The support acts: Abbe May, Sneaky Weasel Gang, Desert Radio and Ashoka. The headline act for the concert will be Callerway. Following day Abbe (songwriting) , Drew Godart (guitar) from Karnivool, Roy Martinez (bass) and Nick Johnson (drum tuning, cymbal selection and kit set-up) from Eskimo Joe will feature as lecturers in our B@M Youth Muso Workshops.

The June gig will feature an even bigger headline band, probably supported by local heroes Ashoka and Electrostatik.

We'll keep you updated with bulletins and you may want to tap into the bands listed on our Top 40. You'll always find the performers at our next gig right up the top. At the other end you'll find bands that have recently played, followed by acts, who want to play at B@M. Send us a comment if you like them and they maybe get the go.

Lastly: PLEASE VOTE AGAINST DAYLIGHT SAVING! It prevents proper FX lighting at outdoors concerts before 9pm in summer. Especially for support bands.
It’s gotta go!!! Nag your elders if you can’t vote yet! Go viral on it and e-mail all your friends!
Peace, The Terminator

Hey :)

Check it out! I wrote a free book on music production! It's for total beginners, but if you aren't new to music production, maybe you'll still learn something... at least you can send it to your friends who always want to ask you a billion questions about music production! It's totally free too; my goal with this is to accumulate as many BFF's as possible.

Reform APRA

Oct 17 2008 3:18 PM

Some interesting info for you, if your music is with APRA. ASCAP is the rights organization in the US. Their bill of rights state. -We have the right to license our works and control the ways in which they are used. -We have the right to choose when and where our creative works may be used for free. Contact APRA and ask them why these freedoms that are available to artists in the US are not available to artists in Australia. Do you want a real business of music that is able compete with the system in the US? Do you want your content to allways be priced at the same price as large bands like the red hot chilly pepars? Why do you have no choice? is the union of APRA positive for your music when every home has an internet connection and the internet is a copy machine? Did you write your songs to be heard or to get a royalty? Don't you need the right to make your work free when the publishers reject it? Why do US composers and songwriters demand these rights? Australian artists can join and transfer to ASCAP. You just have to send in a paper application form, rather than join online. My thoughts are that you would be able to do more with tunes, with these rights within your community than the ones you have with APRA. http://www. ascap. com/rights/
